For 24 hours, Steam is giving PC gamers free, unlimited access to Left 4 Dead.

In a push to get the last 12 people who haven’t played Left 4 Dead onboard, Steam has decided to give their massively successful game away to anyone who wants it. For 24 hours that is. The promotion, called “Freaky Free Friday” will allow Steam users to download the entire game for free and play it for 24 hours before it becomes locked, at which point gamers will have to cough up the cash to continue playing.

The free play offer conveniently coincides with the recently released Survival Pack DLC which is included in the free 24 hour version. The official announcement from Steam’s site:

“Beginning Friday at 12:01 am GMT, the PC version of Left 4 Dead will be available for a free 24-hour trial via Steam. The free trial will include access to the recently released Survival Pack DLC, which introduces a new multiplayer game mode and two additional Versus campaigns. Those who wish to give L4D and the Survival Pack a try may now pre-load everything needed to play with no obligation to purchase.”

In keeping with their recent business plan, Valve is leaning heavily on its big time DLC to bring new modes and gameplay to their series. This well-engineered DLC keeps titles fresh and exciting for players who have already purchased them while offering even more incentives for those on the fence. Valve’s long term support for their franchises is a breath of fresh air in an industry where DLC is usually seen as a way to chisel extra cash out of gamers. Then again, that horse armor looks like it’s solid gold.
