Select Xbox users are getting some freebies in time for the Xbox One’s launch.

You get an Xbox One, you get an Xbox One, and you get an Xbox One — well, not really. Some Microsoft MVPs have reported receiving a code that when redeemed entitles them to a free Xbox One. Other select Xbox users have received emails indicating they will receive a full roster of Killer Instinct characters. Microsoft’s official Xbox Support Twitter accounts have confirmed the emails are legitimate.

Microsoft MVPs (Most Valuable Professionals) are people who Microsoft has recognized as outstanding members of Microsoft’s technical communities. These people have made contributions in the past year to the company’s technical communities and are not company employees. Daylon Deon, “The Velvet Voice” of Unscripted 360 and Microsoft MVP, posted on Twitter that he was receiving a free Xbox One and posted a link to this page. In addition to a free Xbox One are free copies of Zoo Tycoon, Ryse: Son of Rome, Dead Rising 3, and Forza Motorsport 5 for Xbox One. There’s also an Xbox Music pass and 12 months of Xbox Live Gold.

Some Xbox users received emails this morning indicating they will receive all of the characters of fighting game Killer Instinct. The launch title available through Xbox Live is a free download that comes with one character unlocked. Each of the seven other characters are $5 each or $20 for a bundle that unlocks those eight fighters plus two extra ones not initially available.

If you received one of these emails, as long as it is from [email protected], it should be legitimate. There will also be a message on your console. When asked if the Killer Instinct giveaway was random, the official Xbox Twitter account replied, “We considered a variety of things like Gamerscore, LIVE tenure, & other factors in markets where #XboxOne is available.”
