Microsoft Teases Crackdown Sequel

Microsoft has hinted that a sequel to the supercop sandbox game might be more than a pipe dream.

“I want – we need – another Crackdown,” Xbox Live’s director of programming, Larry Hryb, said on Major Nelson’s podcast. “That’s all I’m going to say, so you don’t have to confirm or deny anything. I’m just saying we want it.”

Microsoft Game Studios head Phil Spencer echoed Hryb’s comments, saying that “Crackdown‘s one of my favorites. I’ll leave it at that.”

So if Crackdown‘s one of Microsoft’s “favorites” and they definitely “want it,” what’s to stop Crackdown 2 from being made? Developer Realtime Worlds, for one. When asked if Crackdown 2 was in the works, Realtime Worlds producer Phil Wilson denied the possibility, saying that Microsoft may have demanded it, but it wasn’t going to work out. “Microsoft were a little late in stepping up to the plate to ask for Crackdown 2,” Wilson said. “By then we had already started working on bigger, better things.”

Of course, Microsoft being the owner of the property, it could always get someone else to make the game, if it wanted it badly enough. If that’s how Crackdown 2 pans out, let’s hope whoever steps up into Realtime Worlds’ shoes can pull it off.
