An animated spin-off series for Keiji Inafune’s Mega Man spiritual successor has already been announced.

Mighty No. 9, Keiji Inafune’s Mega Man spiritual successor, may not even be finished yet, but its already got a spin-off anime series in the works. Inafune announced at Anime Expo 2014 that the series is scheduled to debut in Q1 2016, and will be produced by Digital Frontier.

We don’t really know anything about the series, except for a handful of leaked screenshots from the trailer which debuted at the show. I’m sure we’ll hear some more information about it in near future.

Digital Frontier has previously been involved with the Yakuza and Tekken series, Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, Vanquish, and has even worked on films such as Resident Evil: Damnation. It looks like the Mighty No. 9 series will be CGI, rather than in a traditional Japanese anime style.

For Kickstarter backers worried that their contributions will be diverted away from the game and towards this animated series, Inafune stressed that Kickstarter funds would be used exclusively to develop the Mighty No. 9 video games.

Mighty No. 9 is already generating a truckload of hype before anyone has even had a chance to play it, which is a very dangerous thing for a video game to do. I’ve no doubt Inafune will pull off an outstanding game, but it certainly will have a lot to live up to.
