Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part 2 has a new release date, and it may end up with a completely new, non Dead-Reckoningey title.

As reported by the Hollywood Reporter, the sequel to Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning will now release on May 23, 2025. The delay is due largely to the still ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike. But that’s not all that’s happening to this movie. Paramount also seems to have dropped the movie’s original Dead Reckoning Part 2 title.

Why? Paramount hasn’t issued any kind of statement on the matter, but we’d imagine it has to do with the two year time gap. We can imagine movie-goers seeing the words “Part 2,” and being put off because it’s a sequel to a movie they only kind of remember.

Avengers: Endgame was formerly Avengers: Infinity War Part 2 and that title change worked out well for Marvel. We’re sure there were plenty of people who watched that movie not knowing or not caring it was a follow-up. So if Paramount is following suit, they’ll give it a title that is less likely to alienate people who haven’t seen the first.

Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part 1 was released earlier this year and while it was critically acclaimed, it wasn’t the commercial smash that Paramount Pictures may have been waiting for. The first movie also ended on something of a cliffhanger, meaning fans are going to have to wait even longer to find out what happened.

Whatever it ends up being called, the next Mission: Impossible movie is penciled in for a May 23, 2025.
