The opportunity to work with Infinity Ward was too good to pass up, says Sledgehammer.
Sledgehammer Games says that its original project, a third person action-adventure game set in the Call of Duty universe, is currently dead in the water, thanks to the studio’s role as the Modern Warfare 3 co-developer.
Michael Condrey, one of Sledgehammer’s co-founders, said that the studio had been working in the game for around six to eight months, and that the prototype version was coming along nicely. But nice prototype or not, Sledgehammer wasn’t about to say no to Infinity Ward. “[The prototype] was pretty compelling, and it looked really good,” said Condrey. “[But] the opportunity to work on the biggest thing in the industry with … Infinity Ward … was just an opportunity we couldn’t [pass up].”
Condrey likened Sledgehammer’s game to something like the Uncharted games, and said that he thought that there was a large audience for that kind of gameplay, particularly from a franchise as big as Call of Duty. I’m hoping that the Sledgehammer will be able to pick up where it left off once the work on Modern Warfare 3 is completed. A lot of the people at Sledgehammer worked on the original Dead Space, and I’d be interested to see what they make of a more contemporary setting.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 comes out for PC, PS3, Xbox 360, and Wii on November 8th.
