Original Fallout Designer Ready for Fallout 3

With Bethesda now at the helm of the franchise for the upcoming Fallout 3, the game’s original designer is anxious to see how things have changed since 1997.

Speaking with Edge this week, Fallout designer Tim Cain said he has the new game on pre-order and is eager to dive into Bethesda’s third-person take on the Fallout world. “I’m looking forward to Fallout 3 as a consumer, not a developer,” he said. “I just want to play it and enjoy it.”

Cain has spoken with Bethesda about the game, and he likes what he’s seen with Fallout 3. While its new direction may not be quite the way he would have gone about it, he said the game is intriguing. He’ll be among many enthusiasts playing the game when it ships at the end of this month.

That said, he expressed a concern about Fallout 3 and Interplay’s plans for an eventual Fallout MMO.

“The biggest problem I have with expanding the game is that the original games were designed to make you feel like you were one of the last people left on Earth,” he said. “And with Fallout 3 and the online version, I’m curious about how they’ll handle making the game not feel too crowded – making it feel like there’s not much life left out there after the war.”
