PAX or Bust!

This article is over 12 years old and may contain outdated information

This week’s LoadingReadyRun video was “Ways to Prepare for PAX”, a fun look at what you might need to do in order to prepare yourself for the famous convention (and many of which are also applicable for the upcoming Escapist Expo!).

It was shaping up to be a fairly standard video until James suggested that instead of just filming Paul looking at an old PAX map for the “Study Old Maps” joke, we should instead turn the shot into a Ferris Bueller homage. After watching the original scene (which you can find here) we were convinced it would be hilarious, and while not everyone got the joke – after all the movie came out in 1986 – those who did get it, REALLY got it. The movie was on Canadian TV a lot during the early to mid-nineties, what can I say? Luckily for us, even people who didn’t totally the joke were able to enjoy the rest of the video.

Fun Trivia Facts:

  • There was no pizza in the pizza boxes used. Instead I went to a nearby Pizza restaurant and bought unused boxes for $1. A stunning prop budget indeed.
  • The bear hat Kate wears while she is accosting “Wil Wheaton” is mine, and I actually got it at PAX. I picked up from after consuming several “adult drinks” at a CCP party. Speaking of CCP’s legendary PAX parties, the fake invitation Paul buys in the in video reads “Mostly Naked Goth Chicks”, which to be honest, is a pretty accurate description. That event was the first, and last time I have been to a CCP party.
  • We filmed my packing scene the next day. Originally Graham was going to be the one packing, but we made a switch at the last second to mix up the video a bit more. All those board games, consoles, dice and sealed boxes of Magic cards were all things we already had in the house. We are definitely geeks in real life too.
