Go ahead and scream your head off: HBO is filming The Pee-wee Herman Show, to be aired in 2011.
Before Pee-wee’s Playhouse, Pee-wee’s Big Adventure, and Big Top Pee-wee, there was The Pee-Wee Herman Show, Paul Reubens’ original stage show introducing Pee-wee to the world. Reubens revisited Pee-wee’s origins in 2010 with the stage show The Pee-wee Herman Show, which opened to rave reviews and played to sold-out houses in both Los Angeles and New York. The stage production is closing January 2, but fear not: HBO is filming the show, and will air it sometime in 2011.
In the official press release, Nancy Gellar, Senior Vice President for HBO Original Programming, said, “Before his hit series and movies, HBO introduced Paul Reubens’ Pee-wee Herman to a national audience in the ‘Young Comedians’ series, followed by the groundbreaking 1981 special. It’s thrilling to have Paul back on the network, and it will be a blast to return to Pee-wee’s Playhouse.” HBO will shoot the special from the Stephen Sondheim Theatre, where the show is currently running.
Joining Pee-wee in the 90 minute stage production, and subsequently the televised special, are Mailman Mike, Bear, Jambi, Sergio, Cowboy Curtis, Miss Yvonne, and the King of Cartoons.
