Portal Portable Port Gets First Public Release

Aperture Science DS is an unofficial DS port of Valve’s smash hit puzzler: Portal.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: the modding and homebrewing community can sometimes create things of beauty and magnificence. This time, GBATemp forum-goers Smealum and Lobo’s Aperture Science DS, an unofficial Nintendo DS port of Valve’s Portal we saw pop up earlier this year, has received its first public release.

You can download the game for free from Smealum’s website, although he states that the game is in a very early alpha stage. “This version is the first public release. It is very buggy and incomplete, but it is mostly playable. It includes 14 levels.” Of course, being a homebrew game, you’ll need a flash cart to play it.

Flash carts, such as the R4, are most often associated with piracy, and as Nintendo has publicly condemned their sale, it’s a very legal gray area to purchase one for homebrew games such as this. Flash carts are illegal to purchase in Australia, the UK and Japan.

The story of Aperture Science DS centers on Doug Rattman, the Aperture scientist responsible for the infamous “The cake is a lie” scribbling, as well as the mysterious person who took care of Chell in between Portal and Portal 2.

There’s also a level editor should you wish to flex your creative muscle.

Someone at Valve needs to hire these guys ASAP, and make an official 3DS port using these assets. It’s a shame Nintendo doesn’t embrace homebrewers and modders the way Valve does.
