The PS2 has cleared 40 million units sold in Europe as the console reaches its sixth birthday in the region.
With the PS3 launch delayed until March in Europe, the PS2 continues to sell well during the lead-in to the holiday season. “We are extremely proud of the continuing success of PS2,” said SCEE President and CEO David Reeves. ”In the last month or so sales of PS2 throughout Europe and PAL territories have exceeded 100,000 units per week, which is extremely pleasing and proves the format is as popular now as it ever was.
“Through the continual development of new and innovative gaming titles, in particular the social gaming phenomena such as EyeToy, SingStar and Buzz, PS2 will remain the computer entertainment system of choice for new and experienced gamers alike.”
Unofficial reports show the total Xbox sales in Europe at roughly 6 million units at this time last year. Xbox 360 sales numbers have not been released.
