A major Japanese videogame publisher with a storied history of Sony console games has a few choice words for the PS3’s marketing strategy.

Japanese videogame publisher Square Enix has criticized Sony’s sales pitch for the PS3.

“[The future of the PS3] would be tough if its marketing strategy is not straightened up,” Square-Enix President Yoichi Wada said to reporters last Friday.

In Wada’s estimation, Sony leaned too heavily on the PS3 as an all-around entertainment center instead of a gaming console.

“Sony first unveiled the PS3 as a mighty home electronics product. Then, after some badgering from game companies, it shifted the position of the console closer to a game machine,” Wada said.

Sony has emphasized the PS3’s Blu-ray and wireless and networking capabilities, particularly in recent firmware updates.

Square Enix produced the fame Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest titles for Sony Playstation and its successor.
