The Lowdown on This Week’s Downloads

Each week, we’ll help you keep track of the new downloadable content available for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and Wii.

Xbox Live

Xbox Live Arcade has two new games up for grabs this week: Elements of Destruction and Sea Life Safari.

In Elements of Destruction (800 points), you use forces of nature like tornadoes, lightning and to exact revenge on the corporation that gave you the boot. Knocking over buildings and bringing down aircraft seems like a bit of an extreme reaction to getting fired, unless you lost your pension, too. Then it’s totally appropriate.

Sea Life Safari (pictured, 800 points) is like a kinder, moister Pokemon Snap. Take pictures of more than 60 fishies as you swim around locations like a coral reef and the Ship’s Graveyard.

Guilty Gear XX #Reload (seriously, how do they name these games?) and The Legend of Spyro: A New Beginning were added to the Xbox Live Originals library this week. You can download either one for 1200 points.

The Jjaro Net Map Pack is now available for the ten of you still playing Marathon: Durandal. For 250 points, you get access to 12 new maps and two new Achievements.

Coldplay: Musical marvels or whiny Englishmen? Discuss while you download the Coldplay Track Pack for Guitar Hero III (500 points), which includes “Violet Hill,” “Talk,” and “God Put A Smile Upon Your Face”.

Several Rock Band tracks can be yours for less than the price of a latte, including “Rock ‘n’ Roll Dream” – Crooked X ($1), “Afterlife” – Avenged Sevenfold ($2), “Critical Acclaim” – Avenged Sevenfold ($2), and “Hammerhead” – The Offspring ($2).

PlayStation Network

If you feel the need the speed – or just want to bust some heads – consider the combat racing of Fatal Inertia EX ($30). If you’re feeling slightly less aggressive, you can try out the new Oceania course ($5) for Hot Shots Golf: Out of Bounds.

Those of you who are musically inclined can choose from the Coldplay Track Pack for Guitar Hero III, which contains three songs (“Violet Hill,” “Talk,” “God Put A Smile Upon Your Face”) for $6.25, or you can go the Rock Band Route instead. Four new tracks are available for download: “Rock ‘n’ Roll Dream” – Crooked X ($1), “Afterlife” – Avenged Sevenfold ($2), “Critical Acclaim” – Avenged Sevenfold ($2), “Hammerhead” – The Offspring ($2).

If you’re broke (or just plain cheap), there’s still plenty to play with, like bonus content for The Incredible Hulk and demos for Fatal Inertia EX,, NCAA Football, Wolf of the Battlefield: Commando 3, and Hail to the Chimp.

Metal Gear Solid fans will want to download the Metal Gear Solid 4 database, which includes information on characters, weapons and plot elements from the original Metal Gear up to MGS4.The information is accessible via an encyclopedia, a relationship map and a timeline to help you make sense of the franchise’s, shall we say, “complex” elements.

WiiWare

This week on WiiWare, you can grab Block Breaker Deluxe for 800 points or Cocoto Fishing Master for 700. Nintendo wants you to believe that Block Breaker Deluxe is “the coolest block breaker game ever.” Make of that what you will. Nevertheless, if you’ve been jonesing for some pseudo-Breakout action, this may be just the thing.

You might think that Cocoto was just another fishing title, but oh, how wrong you would be. You’re not just catching more than 30 different fish for the sake of sport, you’re doing it as part of a quest to find the five millennial fish. Because they make tasty sashimi? No! Because “only they can stop the magic cauldron from overflowing with lava and prevent the world from being destroyed.” Of course.

Virtual Console

The Virtual Console has but one offering this week: Neo Geo fighter Samurai Shodown (900 points). If you’re a fan of 2-D fighters but somehow missed this one (no, I’m not sure how that would happen, either), make a point of checking out this SNK classic.
