Popular comic book series Scott Pilgrim is being turned into a videogame courtesy of Ubisoft Montreal, creator Bryan Lee O’Malley revealed at Comic-Con yesterday.
Bryan Lee O’Malley’s Scott Pilgrim series is loved by indie comics devotees and youthful romantics-at-heart the world over, but soon enough the property’s going to be a full-blown mainstream multimedia franchise, with a Michael Cera-headlined movie in the works and a videogame for Xbox Live Arcade and PlayStation Network.
According to series creator Bryan Lee O’Malley, the game’s only in early development stages at Ubisoft Montreal, but he thinks it should take the shape of a side-scrolling beat-em-up that follows the plot of the film (which apparently draws from the first four Pilgrim books as well as some elements of the last two).
Unlike the live-action movie with obviously has a realistic style, O’Malley said the game will follow the visual style of the comic, which borrows much of its flavor from classic videogames and tells the story of a twentysomething Toronto resident (Scott Pilgrim, duh) who falls for dream girl Ramona V. Flowers, but has to defeat her seven “evil exes” (read: bosses) before he can go out with her, leading to all sorts of over-the-top ridiculousness. Sounds a lot like a videogame, doesn’t it?
The movie, which is being directed by Edgar Wright of Spaced/Shaun of the Dead/Hot Fuzz fame, is still filming, so don’t expect the game any time soon. Ubisoft will have more details next week – we’ll keep you posted.
