UPDATED: LucasArts Tease New Old Project

LucasArts has teased a new project that will be ‘awesome for old school fans’.

The games industry can get very ‘meta’ at times, and never more so than with teasers. When a developer announces that they’ll be making an announcement, well, it’s enough to make you go cross-eyed.

But this is exactly what LucasArts has done, via its official Twitter feed. The first tweet was the teaser, while the second added a few more details, saying that “It is awesome news for our old school fans.”

As an old school LucasArts fan myself, I am positively tingling with excitement, especially seeing as the Xbox Live release of Monkey Island looms ever close, no pun intended.

With a rich stable of much-loved adventure games to draw on, LucasArts could make a lot of fans very, very happy by re-releasing Day of the Tentacle or Grim Fandango as DLC, but there’s also Star Wars Battlefront III which was thrown into limbo following the closure of Free Radical. Slightly less old school, but it had some wicked concept art.

Whatever the actual announcement is, it’s coming on Monday, so keep your eyes on Twitter!

UPDATE: Well, the cat’s out of the bag, and what a cat it is! LucasArts have partnered up with Valve to release ten classic games on Steam.

On Wednesday, you’ll be able to buy:

  • Armed and Dangerous
  • Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis
  • Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade: The Graphic Adventure
  • LEGO Indiana Jones: The Original Adventure
  • LOOM
  • Star Wars Battlefront II
  • Star Wars Republic Commando
  • Star Wars Starfighter
  • The Dig
  • Thrillville: Off the Rails

What makes this even sweeter is that this is the ‘first round’ of releases, with more to come in the future.

In the press release announcing the deal, Darrell Rodriguez, president of LucasArts said:

“This effort is going to make it possible to introduce a whole new generation of gamers to LucasArts’ classic games. It also gives more people a chance to play our games by making them available long after they’ve disappeared from store shelves. We hope our fans are as excited as we are about our plans and we can’t wait to share what’s coming next. This is just the beginning.”

Grim Fandango via Steam? I can’t wait!
