Marvel’s Avengers Will Offer Free Next-Gen Upgrade for PS4/XB1 Owners

Square Enix has announced that those who purchase Marvel’s Avengers on current-gen consoles will also be able to play the game on next-gen consoles from the same hardware family, being of course PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X. This will apply regardless of whether players purchase a physical or digital copy.

The next-gen versions will come with a host of updates and improvements. On PlayStation 5, the game will boast an array of visual upgrades, some of which have been outlined on the PlayStation.Blog by Gary Snethen, Chief Technology Officer at Crystal Dynamics: “The new GPU allows us to increase our texture resolution, push a higher level of detail farther from the player, enhance our ambient occlusion, improve our anisotropic filtering and add a variety of new graphics features such as stochastic screen-space reflections with contact-aware sharpening.”

Players will be able to choose between modes for enhanced graphics or higher frame rates at least on PlayStation 5. Specific updates for the Xbox Series X version have not yet been announced, but more details are set to follow.

Furthermore, save data will be transferable, so players will be able to continue their adventures when they make the leap to the new consoles. Marvel’s Avengers will also support cross-generation play within hardware families. In practice, this means that Xbox Series X players will be able to play alongside Xbox One owners, and the same for PS5 with PS4.

Marvel’s Avengers releases on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One on Sept. 4 after an earlier delay, while the next-gen versions are planned to launch alongside the next-gen consoles themselves.
