Starfield may have a release date, but it will still be some time before we see any updates on The Elder Scrolls VI. Speaking with The Telegraph (paywall) during a recent interview, Bethesda Game Studios executive producer Todd Howard explained that The Elder Scrolls VI is still only in its “design phase.” In other words, it will be years before we get our hands on it.
Howard added that the game will have the benefit of taking advantage of the Creation Engine 2 – the same tech powering Starfield, and the team is ensuring the engine can do everything the team has in mind: “Every game will have some new suites of technology so Elder Scrolls 6 will have some additions on to Creation Engine 2 that that game is going to require.”
The Elder Scrolls VI was announced alongside Starfield back in 2018. All we got then was a brief cinematic trailer, and we have seen nothing since, which makes sense if The Elder Scrolls VI is still in the design phase. Meanwhile, Howard recently commented on Starfield’s E3 2021 in-engine reveal trailer, promising “hundreds of hours” of gameplay when it arrives in 2022.
Additionally, Bethesda has its Indiana Jones title from Wolfenstein developer MachineGames in the works. Howard told The Telegraph that he has always liked the Indiana Jones property but “never thought I’d have the opportunity to make a game.”
“I think I originally pitched [to George] Lucas in 2009 and I’ve been trying to find a way to make that [since],” Howard said. “And I think the work (MachineGames) have done, they’re just phenomenal developers and storytellers. And when I started talking to them about it, it was a good fit. And we got to the opportunity to talk to Lucas and Disney about it and they were super excited.”
