Vancouver Police Recruit in Second Life

This article is over 17 years old and may contain outdated information

The Vancouver Police Department hits the virtual streets.

Second Life has frequently been referred to as a sort of graphically-enhanced internet chat room, and true to form, much of the experience there centers on sexual themes.

But according to The Vancouver Sun, the city’s police department is trying to recruit and boost its ranks through this virtual world.

Kevin McQuiggin, head of the department’s tech crimes division, said, “I just need smart, tech-savvy people. … As we move into the future, we’re going to need people who understand technology – that are conversant with it, that understand the impact of it and understand how to use it.”

He adopted the idea when he learned of a similar effort by a local college-based department head who also used Second Life to attract students to a new course.
