Injustice: Gods Among Us debuts on Tuesday, April 16, and to celebrate developer NetherRealm Studios has issued a launch trailer full of melodrama and superhuman violence.
The clip embedded at right marks the final pre-release footage NetherRealm Studios will issue for its imminent DC Comics fighting game Injustice: Gods Among Us. While it may not be as gameplay-heavy as many of its predecessors, this launch trailer does a far better job of serving as a teaser for the story you’ll find in Injustice. I don’t want to spoil anything for those who haven’t played the game yet (or read the surprisingly not terrible comic book tie-in series), but it’s safe to say that Injustice has a far more fleshed-out, complex storyline than almost any other fighter in existence. Granted, it’s largely a mashup of fighting game logic and comic book logic, so don’t expect deep meditations on the duality of man, but for those of you who enjoy fighting games and/or comic books, Injustice’s tale of hero on hero violence should please you – especially given that it’s closest Marvel analogue, Marvel Vs Capcom 3, has an utterly disposable plot backing its obvious multiplayer focus.
Anyway, back to the trailer: Overall, it’s average. We get a few snippets of DC heroes and villains acting in their own characteristic manners (Superman is a nigh-godlike, Catwoman is sultry, Aquaman is doing an Admiral Ackbar impression, etcetera), a few glimpses of the game’s most cinematic attacks, and that’s about it. This is roughly what we’d expect from a launch trailer for an upcoming fighter, so we can’t fault NetherRealm for issuing a vignette like this. The clip isn’t great, but as far as one final burst of hype for the game, it gets the job done.
Not like I have to tell any of you, but drop your own opinions in the comments. And while you’re there, throw out a bit of speculation on who you’d like to see as DLC fighters for the game. Personally, I’m holding out hope for the Suicide Squad incarnation of Grant Morrison, the cast of Hitman, and Kyle Rayner’s deadly misogynist fridge.
