Critical Miss: Nintendo vs. Rovio

Grey Carter:

As for Nintendo and shovelware. Nintendo makes a profit on every game sold for the Wii and like Microsoft and Sony, they decide which games can be certified for release as well as which devs get dev kits. They decide, perhaps indirectly, what kind of games can be released on their system and, like Sony with the PS2 before them, they decided to embrace shovelware chode. On a tremendous scale.

There aren't really a ton of quality third parties developing strong titles for the wii. Best I can come up with Ubi(No More Heroes)/Capcom (Tatsunko Vs. Capcom) and Sega (Madworld). I think they kind of have to take what they can get in that respect. Only idiots buy that shit anyways.

What's wrong with Erin lower lip, and who is she betting on?

HankMan:
Girls, Girls you're both whores. Get over it!

Whoever loses, Mojang AB Wins!

.....*Takes off Sunglasses* I dare you to say that again.

Erin in the last panel scared me. Maybe because I had my eyes locked on her lower lip for most of the comic.

Yeah, mayber her lower lip's a bit too big, but either way looks good on her.

Do you mean idiots buy shovelware, or idiots buy the games you mentioned?

While I admit, Nintendo has embraced shovelware a little too openly, third party devs aren't exaclty helping. Making a good Wii game without resorting to waggling minigame collections is possible. It's hard, but possible. But yet nothing is made but shovelware. A bit of a "nobody is blameless" scenario. I'd give more blame to Nintendo, but there ARE good third party Wii titles, so it's not like one can say "well, they try, but it's just too hard."

Onyx Oblivion:
To be fair, Nintendo doesn't make most of the shovelware themselves.

But then again...

MARIO PARTY

the now defunct Hudsonsoft made mario party not Nintendo.

I meant only idiots buy the Shovelware... I thought that would be obvious. And the good games are few and far between which would makes me believe that it IS hard to make a good game for the wii. Just because something is possible doesn't make it not difficult.

Nor does it make it worthwhile really. Its a big investment since its unlikely you can port your work to the PS3 or 360. And because the demographic with the wii are just difficult all the way around. The good games don't sell well enough to really make them all that viable.

Go Rovio! Go Finland!

True. I do agree that while it is possible to make a good game for the Wii, when the easier options of A: Make it for the PS3 or XBox or B: Just make a minigame collection are there, it does kind of make the good Wii games scarce. Plus, even if a good games was made for the Wii, there's also the good chance that it just won't sell.

Damn you for stealing my joke.

bomblord:
So she's betting on Rovio cuz Nintendo doesn't make the casual shovelware

They make the Wii, then allow people to make the shovelware (which they also profit from). It's like saying Gaddafi isn't doing anything wrong because he's not the one actually in the plane dropping the bombs.

Yes, I just compared Nintendo to a dictator slaughtering his own people. Damn qualifying statements...

It isn't that it's any harder to make a good game for the Wii (though I imagine it takes a little bit more creativity when it comes to controls and visual design) but that there is simply no incentive to do so when awful-ass ports and mini game collections sell as well as they do.

Guys GUYS! Wouldn't you accomplish so much more if you worked together? A DS/3DS version of Angry Birds perhaps...?

Gaddfi is employing Mercenaries... So at the very least that would be outside development like M:OM. Which as bad as it was wasn't shovelware.

I am not going to pick sides, but the apple store and the android market who are getting flooded with cheap games kind of remind me something... The video games crash of 1983 comes to mind and now more then ever because Angry Birds is just a P2P version of games I used to play on Armorgames when I didn't have any money for games that weren't made with two minutes of flash. Then again Nintendo has to shame themselves as well because their games haven't been that amazing either.

i lol'd. keep it up!

I'll put $5 on Iwata. All he has to do is call in Reggie Fils-Aime for back-up and Rovio dude is going down. His body is ready, not that he needs to use it. He just has to stare at you and you're done.

Your joke? I'm quite certain it was the comic's joke. It could be talking about Angry Birds, or it could be talking about Wii Fit among other things Nintendo has put out.

Ah I see! Well then it seems as if we have mistaken who our enemy is....*Cough Mojang Cough*

The_root_of_all_evil:
The thing is, you could replace these two guys with 99% of the game CEO's and it'd still be the same joke.

Why can't people just say things like "It's a good game. I'd play it."

You could also do the same with the fans of both 'casual' and 'hardcore' games...

You do make a good point though.

CM156:
No matter who loses, I win.

Also, I have never understood how fair competition at a lower price can "ruin" an industry.

I don't get why everyone's fortelling the end of anything (except the polar ice caps). PC games and Sony/Microsoft/Nintendo platforms aren't going anywhere any time soon.

Oh ho, haha, I see what you did there, Critical Miss. Well played, well played.

Grey Carter:

Mr. Omega:
If it were any dev besides Rovio, I'd say Nintendo wasn't right. They had a point, but a flawed overall arguement.

But I hate Rovio. All they did was take a flash game, one that you'd probably find on Newgrounds or some other site, put birds as the cannonballs, and now their one of the bigshots in the indie scene, a fucking insult to indie devs who MAKE THEIR OWN DAMN GAMES.

Also, in defense of Nintendo, Mario Party excluded, Nintendo themselves don't make most of the shovelware. Hell, if you want to blame Nintendo for all the party and mini game collections, how about we blame Infinity Ward for all of the modern realistic FPS games? It's not Nintendo's fault for the shovelware, it's the companies who made it's fault for trying to cash in on a fad with no regards to quality. Sure, some blame goes to Nintendo for letting them put it on the Wii, but like I said, don't blame the one who started the trend for those who follow it poorly.

Eh. A big fallacy is that the indie scene is pumping out highly original games when it isn't. Look at most of the big indie hits and you'll see they're fairly derivative. Well made but derivative. Angry birds is no exception.

As for Nintendo and shovelware. Nintendo makes a profit on every game sold for the Wii and like Microsoft and Sony, they decide which games can be certified for release as well as which devs get dev kits. Yeah, you'd think they'd know better though.

I mean, after the videogame crash of 1982, Nintendo basically saved the situation by being incredibly anal about who could develop for their systems, and even how many games a company could release...

The 'Seal of Quality' was taken fairly seriously once, but it seems to have been forgotten altogether.

(That's not to say there was no crap on the NES, but Nintendo was making it pretty difficult to release really crappy games compared to the situation with the Wii.)

All I see are two circus seals slap-fighting over the same market.
Yeah, Nintendo? For all the talk you make about cheap, worthless games clogging up the market, I only have two words:

Wii Music

The 1983 crash... wasn't that the time when Nintendo dropped the whole 'game system' tag and replaced it with 'entertainment system' to distance themselves from the video game crash?

Though I doubt it's going to happen to the other consoles, since they barely have any small independent developers to flood the market with shovelware with their high development costs. And the PS3 and Xbox are lengthening their life cycles, which will nicely recoup the console development costs.

Though it will be kind of ironic if we have another crash and the PC is the only platform unaffected... again.

my question exactly....

Agreed, a new console with higher development costs to decrease shovelware would be nice.

But then again...

MARIO PARTY 8

Fix'd pal. 8 sucked so much

I like the comic. Of course I'd have to side with Nintendo because Rovio can suck it. Angry Birds = Prettier Crush the Castle, look it up. Also Crush the Castle 2 came out a little while after Angry Birds and has everything Angry Birds does and a whole lot more.

The last sentence is hilarious though, because it describes both of the companies. At least Nintendo also has its core franchises though, which will probably always be great. As long as Nintendo makes them of course...

And as for the style of the comic, what's up with her lip in the last panel? I'm quite fine with it, makes her look more attractive and whatnot, but it's just appeared out of nowhere. I guess when you start "touching up" a character, people will probably be surprised by anything new. But I like it.

lol way to play both sides while playing neither lol.

ha! i really loved this one!

UltraXan:
Soooooo... Who's she betting on?

She's betting on it being a tie.

The 3DS came out not too long ago. If you ever felt that your portable gaming device's battery lasted far too long, and would rather trade in reliability and...portability, for shallow 3D effects that work if you're holding the device at a specific distance and angle, has Nintendo got a deal for you!

And any time someone mentions Mario Party, my palms feel blistered.

Onyx Oblivion:
To be fair, Nintendo doesn't make most of the shovelware themselves.

MARIO PARTY

See kitchen moma.
have you seen the wii channel lately? and some of those corney pokemon games they actually put on disk.....the horror.

Onyx Oblivion:
To be fair, Nintendo doesn't make most of the shovelware themselves.

But then again...

MARIO PARTY

To be fair, I think they finally realized that Mario Party was a dead industry 4 years ago. That said, 2 and 3 were alot of fun.
