LadyMint:

lacktheknack:
Wow, I've never seen a more divisive video series... not even Lisa Foiles' Top Five (which is awesome).

I fall squarely on the "Urrrrgh..." side of the divide.

Assassin Xaero:
I'd take women in full-plate armor rather than men in metal plate skimpy clothes.

Also this. Seriously, armor is armor because it's supposed to protect you, not a third of you.

I feel the same way. I don't want guys in chainmail speedos. I want everyone who's supposed to be out in combat wearing the proper gear for that situation. I'm sure I'm not the first person to say this, but a woman can still be sexually appealing with body armor on. And frankly, I'd feel a little insulted if game developers started overly sexualizing men to try and market their games to me. That's not why I buy games at all.

Hell, Tali is the most attached I've got to a female character, and she is ALWAYS plated up, and GLaDOS, I would look past the wires and circuits and discuss her love of testing over a slice of cake... ahhhh....

loodmoney:
I was hoping that the last video was a one-off; that Sterling wasn't coming back.

The Escapist: do you really need to be giving this guy a voice here? He already has Destructoid, and it's not like he's contributing a whole heap to this site.

It's also worth remembering just how qualified Sterling to talk about sexism:
http://gomakemeasandwich.blogspot.com/2011/02/in-his-words-why-jim-sterling-is-in.html

That certainly opened my eyes up to this Jim character. Thanks for linking that.

OT: Okay, this is two strikes for me. The first one was really just a pointless ramble that brought nothing new to the table. This one was just pointless and brought nothing at all.

It was just crude, stupid, and all around pointless. His main point, while having some coherent points, was completely lost in his dick jokes and was pretty much utterly stupid. Equality in sexism by making everyone show skin? The hell kind of a solution is that? It's one big joke is what it is. This is hardly an insightful, and how anyone can really think that solves anything beside making the gamer stereotype of "fat, gawking, man-children" is beyond me. I enjoy my fair share of T&A, I can get down with dick jokes, I have nothing against that, but this is just ridiculous.

If this is meant to be a parody of something, or just one big joke, then this guy is trying way too hard.

Sexism does not just mean showing skin or boobage. The constant portrayal of men as huge, beefy, athletic, etc... is equally as sexist because it shows the man as the dominant person, trying to oust the other men. The solution to sexism isn't to show men in skimpy outfits like woman. It's developing

I simply can't believe that this is a "serious" video series. The thumbnail of this show on the front page being a pair of tits doesn't help. Stop insulting our intelligence. The Escapist is not the same as Destructoid, either adjust to that or stay there.

I'm giving this one more chance. Somehow I doubt it'll redeem itself.

Iron Lightning:
I meant to say that Jim's statement that "Men are wired to objectify women" is incorrect. Fantasizing about a woman with a personality that you find attractive is the opposite of objectifying women.

I didn't make myself clear :(. Men create fantasy personas for women, so,
step 1: look at woman,
step 2: imagine being with woman,
step 3: what's she like? *insert ideal personality traits in dream-lover here*

Iron Lightning:
When confronted with such a photograph a straight male would focus entirely on the female and would likely cover up the naked man with his hand or otherwise attempt to ignore the naked man, and I daresay our straight male friend would prefer that the naked man was absent from the picture.

An adult man secure in his sexuality is normally pretty comfortable seeing a male dong.
I'd give the naked man a look. Know your competition, etc.

Not as bad as the last one. The delivery is still total shite though.

Elate:
Hell, Tali is the most attached I've got to a female character, and she is ALWAYS plated up, and GLaDOS, I would look past the wires and circuits and discuss her love of testing over a slice of cake... ahhhh....

Yeh! Yeh! Nobody gives GLaDOS lemons! But indeed, despite being nothing more than a computerised voice, I thought GLaDOS was quite the endearing sort in Portal 2. I also, thought Caroline cut quite the figure in her portrait, and I'm pretty sure she wasn't wandering the Aperture Science facility in some skimpy chain mail.

Man, Jim Sterling on the Escapist? Really? Keep his misogynist ass over at Destructoid, I really want absolutely nothing to do with him here.

deleted

Sorry Jim, maybe you gots the funny, or the interesting. But so far you haven't shown either. Not saying I could do a better job, but show biz ain't for everyone, kid.

This seems about as interesting as hearing my roommate complain about the gaming industry... A guy who only plays World of Warcraft. Only.

Oh dear god, Jim. Oh dear god.

I will admit, this episode did have me laughing.

Wow, I can just feel the standards here dropping like a rock down Jupiters gravity well.

Is this really the direction the Escapist wants to go?

This man and his ilk are why we cant have nice things.

Those are some pretty damning quotes. Geez. :O

Xirema:
I really, 'really' like this guy, but we do need some sort of content disclaimer for him.

Great solution though.

Definitely this.

see, Im just curious WHY of all times, the escapist would add him NOW, when they're trying to get us to vote for them to win that " lifestyle" award thing. Because of Jim, I certainly dont feel like voting for them. I still am gonna go on this site, but i dont think at this point they deserve that award.

Awesome.

I've thought of this as well, but you generally get a fairly robust crowd who's upset about 'objectification in general' rather than the whole equality thing.

I'm just for the equality, I could care less about objectification as long as it's equal.

-edit-
Don't kid yourselves, we want the bikini mail. Putting full plate on both genders would be appealing for a bit as a novelty, but in the end we'd go back to Return of the Jedi and Prince of Persia.

Wasn't too fond of the first episode but this one gave me a good laugh...

Lenin211:
Is this guy a joke or just awful?

I think he's both.

In the words of someone else I'm too lazy to actually quote....Strike 2.

Seriously?

I'm actually having some trouble with this one. Is it a silly parody or is he being serious? It's hard to tell, ambiguous in a bad way.

Regardless of which it is, though, the video was vulgar and intellectually bland.
Congratulations, Escapist. You now have a front page figureheaded by a picture of CGI tits, and if you click on it, it leads to an assortment of phallic imagery drawn in MS Paint.

Yes, that's the process for ascribing a personality to a stranger woman through a fantasy. The process for objectifying a woman through a fantasy is:
Step 1: Look at woman.
Step 2: Imagine being with woman.
Step 3: What's she like?
Step 4: Answer: She's just an advanced fleshlight.

But would you be more horny because of the naked man's presence?

i didnt watch it but watched the first one then when i saw another one came out i felt the need to comment i have a right to complane cause its the internet and everyone eltes complanes

Better than the past one, but really not interesting. I'll give him one more go next week. Third time's the charm?

Jim Sterling:
Solving the Sexism Situation

Sexism in videogames is the worst social situation civilization mankind has ever faced. Thank the sweet babe o' Nazareth that someone has a way to fix it!

Watch Video

Should of ended it with "We have to cater to PUSSIES just as much as DICKS" instead of Vaginas and penises. That way it'd be a double ententra

To be honest, I was almost getting interested for a moment, until he wheeled out the 'Have men dress in bikinis' crack, and all his credibility soaked away like a spider down the drain.

Onyx Oblivion:
I like Jim, every since I found Dtoid.

He does need to lose those glasses, though.

Still think he should stick to issues like this, though.

That PLAYING IT WRONG one showcased a lot of bullshit in the game reviewing process.

If only the videos he'd done on The Escapist where like those two, then at least he'd be having a message that actually mattered a bit.

I still can't stand the guy, but I guess that's just a matter of taste, but if (and that's still a big "if" I think, judging from the 2 videos he's made so far and the reaction here on The Escapist) he should be allowed to keep posting stuff here on The Escapist, then at least make him choose a topic that we haven't seen discussed several times already... And with WAY better points than he's making ;)

Iron Lightning:

I see :D
I imagined 'advanced fleshlight' would still equate to some kind of 'personality', but perhaps not :).

Im sorry, but this show is just poor and amateur alongside ZP,MovieBob,Extra Credits.

Hell i get more out of watchin Lisa Foiles top 5, even if it is a silly show, its fun and has reason to exist.

The Jimquisition show however should be cancelled.

Maybe we should get a music critic? :P

Xirema:
I really, 'really' like this guy, but we do need some sort of content disclaimer for him.

Great solution though.

The "content disclaimer" is the big pair of tits in the episode picture. If you click on that, and expect a kids show, something's SERIOUSLY wrong with you.

It's far from the first time an article has had substantial cleavage across the banner. (Lisa Foiles is showing off pretty nicely, if no one has noticed)

Anyways, let's not get hyperbolic here. I don't expect to click on anything here with the guarantee that it is all 'kid friendly'. But I don't want to click on something that might be flashing pictures of a naked man's groin at me without at least a warning.

Jim is a disgusting human being. He doesn't deserve a spotlight.

Fire him.

"Fat Princess won't get pregnant in order to trap you: Everybody knows that women do this. They love getting themselves all preganted up so that they can force you to marry them and be stuck with their cancerous hides."

"Since women are basically just 3D porn, what is an anti-pornography stance if not an anti-female stance?"

"Koei Tecmo employees will get $1,000 for their first child, $2,000 for their second child and a whole $20,000 if their loose and flapping vaginas can squirt out a third."

"During these times of recession, it would be great if Walmart could pay its mostly braindead and poor workforce not to f*ck."

[Twitter postings]

"I know exactly what cunts look like. I'm talking to one right now.

Just ask your husband for permission before using the computer next time.

People like you *revel* in sexism, so sure. I'm just giving you what all attention-seeking little bitches crave.

You're the embarrassment. To your gender, your species, and all feminazi sluts like yourself."

Jim couldn't be the sterotype of an angry virgin, striking out at women and blaming them for his loneliness, any more perfectly (and disgustingly) if he tried.

Get rid of him/it.

I guess he KIND of has a point there, but I can't help but feel he's purposefully trying to piss people off. Still, I'm just glad to see a new episode, to show this isn't a one-time thing.

Why does he act like it's such a retarded idea for men to be sexualized? He spends the first half of the video bitching about how people are over-sensitive about sexualized females, then spends the second half trying to make the very notion of male-oriented fanservice seem absurd. Does anybody else notice how backwards this thinking is?

Also, considering your raison d'etre seems to be getting people riled up (mission accomplished on my part), you may want to consider this as a new theme song:

Hmm. I think this Jim sterling fellow could actually work in the escapist. I mean really. Are we not just a giant den of overly opinionated video game dudes and dudettes here? Personally if a guy can get in front of a camera and make an okay enough script where he nails something with his wit and sardonic attitude he's just the right man for the escapist community.

Well well, looks like he actually took some advice from the comments. ...A frightening thought, but it was an improvement.
Got through the entire episode this time. (Well ok, about 4/5ths of it before getting bored.) Still think the accent is fake.

CurtDogg:
Reading so many comments of people COMPLETELY missing the point of the video is just about, if not funnier, than the actual series itself. Looks like I'll have yet another thing on The Escapist to look forward to on mondays.

*yaaaaaaaaawn* Being unentertaining is the joke. Post-modernism and all that. Got it.

SideburnsPuppy:
Also, considering your raison d'etre seems to be getting people riled up (mission accomplished on my part), you may want to consider this as a new theme song:

Riled up? Most people here seem to be utterly bored by him.

Zizzousa:
Well that was awful. What did it add on to Extra Credits' assessment of the issue? Nothing. And it was semi-offensive at points. Some things just can't be joked about; some can.

What did he joke about that you think should be off-limits in terms of taste?

Honestly I can't think of anything that sticks out so I'd like to know what you're talking about (not trying to accuse you of being thin skinned).

Awful, awful, awful. Totally uninteresting, points generally invalid, silly and wrong, delivery boring, etc. This guys more self-rigteous than Moviebob, for god's sake.

WilliamRLBaker:

Raistlinhawke:
With all due respect, Escapist, as it is your site and all, but weren't we clear with the initial reaction this new series? Menial improvements does not make up for his complete lack of joke ability and abrasive, unappealing demeanor. His production values are still rock bottom, and he still fails to offer a concise, valid point in any meaningful way.

At the very least I hope at least a portion of the detractors have the courage of their convictions and follow through with their threat to abandon viewership of the site until Sterling's removal. It would at least provide the free market excuse for dumping the series apparently needed in this situation.

Please Escapist, at least do the most obvious math, not that much effort is required here.

the fact you actually think most of escapist videos have good production values...is the single reason not to listen to you.

Never stated that fact. Sterling's production is just the worst of an already amateur set. I never even made an assumptive association.

loodmoney:
I was hoping that the last video was a one-off; that Sterling wasn't coming back.

http://gomakemeasandwich.blogspot.com/2011/02/in-his-words-why-jim-sterling-is-in.html

If you read deeper into ANY of those quotes on the blog, you can see they were mostly jokes (in poor taste, perhaps). If you read any deeper into the "Daphny 'controversy,'" you can argue that the woman he was bickering with was equally to blame, alluding to him only being able to get sex from hookers and having a small penis. In fact, the origin of the argument is unclear and I would hazard to guess that Jim was trolling her hard (his MO) and she was taking the bait. If you read Anna (I'm assuming she's the writer of gomakemeasandwich) other posts, she lambastes Reiq for being a sexist, without realizing that Reiq is a pornographic artist. One doesn't get far into the porn business drawing pictures of flat chested women.

Regardless of how crude you think Jim Sterling is, he's certainly more qualified to talk about sexism that the writer of the blog, who's quick to turn any slightest hint of perceived "sexism" into a shitstorm and throws around the word "sexist" like Fox News throws around the name "Hitler." She finds misogyny in everything. I've said it before and I'll say it again: If everything's misogynistic, nothing is misogynistic.

Also, I find it strange that objectification in women in video games is stirs passionate debate, but the objectification of men in video-games is a nonissue. Not every man is ripped like Chris Redfield or Kratos...
