Mario Dies on the Cover of Super Mario Bros

I've never noticed that. Poor Mario. :<

Irridium:
Really? Huh, well that's pretty interesting.

Wait, hold on. So, nobody mentioned this before? Has it really been 20+ years(or however long ago Super Mario Bros. came out) before anyone noticed this?

Wow.

Or is this just a Photoshop job? I don't know, never played the game or saw the box art myself.

That's the real box art.

WHAT HAS BEEN SEEN CANNOT BE UNSEEN.

Actually, I don't think that's quite the case since the motion lines clearly show Mario heading in an upward direction towards the wall, now there's no way you could get that kind of motion while falling into a pit. In fact I'm pretty sure you couldn't reproduce the box art in game.

Right . . . Mario dies on the cover . . . if only he came with multiple lives, then this wouldn't be a problem.

haha that's funny. altho I really only felt truly bad about accidentally killing Yoshi (tho in retrospect, technically he ran away into the lava himself...)

still, I never did do this to that green dinosaur

we are still learning more about the Italian Plumber in his first big game. Thats shows Classic Mario is here to stay

Gah! Spoilers! No spoilers! :P

Well. Mario's always been dead to me, so...

I can't believe this stupid shit is making the rounds.

John the Gamer:
I never played this game(born 1992), but I find this incredibly funny.

Wait, what!? I played the original Mario along with Mario 3 starting when I was 2 (born in '93), and I still go back to Mario's NES and SNES days on a regular basis. Even nowadays, it's readily available via emulators or the Virtual Console. Do yourself a favor and play it now.

Huh, this feels like the time when I discovered it was Mark Hamil who did the Joker's voice in "Batman: the Animated Series." Essentially:
mind = BLOWN O_O

Photoshop didn't exist, when it was released around 88-89 it probably had like 100 users, tops. But it certainly is an edit, there is no point in-game that Mario will have that slanted posture. If you notice the angle between the top of the block and Mario's head, you will realise that it is a cut-out.

This isn't my reflection, by the way, but something I read.

damn kids and your music television!! *grumbles and waters the lawn*

Now THAT is an interesting find. The saying is true. You learn something new everyday.

Article is REALLY trying too hard. As has been pointed out, he is scew'd and clearly going into the block background. Not a scene from the game, just art.

I find this hilarious :D

I never noticed this because my box art was the Japanese version of the game (quite a different look entirely for those who have seen it).

I remember thinking "why is he jumping into a wall?" when I was a wee lad, but never went beyond that.

Oh, wow I cannot unsee now Toad flipping me off in the unzoomed picture.

Reading WAY too much into this. It could be his arms. Or maybe it's some highly secret f-you put in by developers 20 years ago just to mess with people who they would assume would never see it, by making a sprite with a hand and middle finger made entirely of ONE block. Seems likely to me.

briunj04:
Neku Sakuraba is so hipster that he actually died before the game even started.

Spoiler alert.....
There have been some theoreys that you're already in hell in the game though.

wow, i've never noticed that...
cannot unsee...

John Funk:

Boy, that's kind of morbid, huh? Not many other videogames have the gall to show their hero - and the player's avatar - in the throes of death on the box art. In fact, I can't think of a single one.

Errrrr....

image

I'm pretty sure thats the protagonist of the game. Pretty sure he's dead/dying :P

Anyway, interesting find! Though I'm willing to bet its one of those things that the makers of the game didn't even realise they were doing when putting the box art together :3

Um...

(long pause)

Um...

Um...

I've been thinking this since 1985.

(I'm really sorry if I'm coming off the wrong way...)

he's just taking a nap! Killing demons is exhausting work.

Malfy:
Mario's foot overlaps the bricks, which means the bricks, fireball, and lava are actually in the background. Mario leaping is essentially just a pose.

Yeah, It's not saying "You're gonna die," but "Can you overcome this perilous situation?"

Wow, the game that was the single best selling game in existence till Wii Sports has something right on the cover that NOBODY NOTICED BEFORE? Were the internet! We point every single thing in youtube comments for LOL's, how could we miss this?

Given the fact he's jumping in front of the bricks on the cover, I would say he's not actually dying they're just in the background regardless of how the game itself plays out.

How could you not have played this game? Even if you were born after the fact?
My parents had the game, that's where I encountered it
They're hippies

If you were not very old during that time then it is highly unlikely that you would have ever played it. I have only ever actually played the first two marios a handful of times and never beat either of them and I was alive when they came out.

man, you just crushed my childhood.

nah, actually never liked him, he should go die in fire.... oh wait.

I'm pretty sure those are supposed to be thumbs. _

You're giving Atlus ideas. D'=

Pretty much sums up my experience with the game actually :D
