why should gender even matter in this?

they where self absorbed little shits that broke the law, and taunted the authority's, and now, they're getting off WAY to easy, with the longest sentence just shy of 3 years. No, not good enough 5 years, min, no computer access during jail time, and 5 year with out computer access after release.

THAT would be 'fair', after all, you commit a crime with a gun, you lose your right to own one, i don't see why computers should be any different, what with the potential damage scale being even higher.

Because he's got a damn point, people would be appalled to the idea of women getting raped over a crime, but you'd wish mentally and physically scarring torment on a few egotistical shits. Please take 5 minutes to imagine something repeatedly forced into your rear without lubricant and try and tell me that isn't going to cause life long damage, because that's what you're wishing on them. There's an awful lot wrong about wishing that.

Chances are that they'll be monitored once they get out anyway, and considering you can barely survive without a computer these days, it'd be like taking away their ability to write.

Think things through before spewing all that pent up spite. At the end of the day, Governments have done considerably worse to their own people than taking down a few websites for a little while, and being a bit of a dick, y'know, like outright slaughtering people, yet they get away scot free.

Jesus people, this comments section is disgusting.

Lunar Templar:
*snip*

Good to know that rape is justified as long as it is to self absorved little shits.

I'll tell my local pedophile to use that defense, god knows there are quite a few little shits here.

*That was a joke btw*

Elate:

I,
Do,
Not,
CARE.

At all.

We could have a story up in a few days about how all 4 for then got run over by the bus that was supposed to bring them to jail and my reaction would still be 'nothing of value lost'

If you want 'sympathy or compassion' for them, talk to some one else, I have none for any criminal that endangers lives or lively hood for laughs.

Sentences seem too harsh in my opinion. Sure, the pedophile deserves his sentence but taking down some websites for a few hours and being an asshole doesn't justify taking someone's life away for 2-3 years.

A year or maybe half a year to scare them straight and that's that. But 3 fucking years? That right there seems cruel and unusual. But these are UK prisons, I don't know exactly how the situation is there.

mysecondlife:
Didn't they also hack Escapist during their cyber crime spree?

No, they just crashed it.

OT: There's something inherently hilarious about a story that reads "Peter dared Paul to do something... so Paul did. The end." On the whole, I think the whole mess may have been worth it in the end.

Not that they don't deserve it but how exactly did they get caught? Didn't they take any safety measures?

EDIT-I have just been informed of some of the thing that they have done and well the stuff below doesn't really apply now-but I'll leave it because I put so much effort in writing it out and it still has some relevance although it been diluted a lot >_<

Really.......were really doing this......*sigh*........For crying out loud we really giving them jail time I mean I could understand the one with the pics of children but the rest?Just for hacking were sending them to jail, not stealing money, not selling secret info to the enemy just hacking T_T.

Why-to rehabilitate them no sending them to jail won't do that in fact your exposing them to other worse criminal elements that will likely make them worse-is it to protect society from what having their favourite site taken down really-so then it's punishment we are putting them in a place where they will experience hell, possible rape, beatings and complete mind destroying punishment because they irritated and wasted the gov time, sorry but that not enough reason.

And everyone cheering because "It's the law-we love the law-the laws always right and if you break then you're scum" news flash the law is not god just because there is a law doesn't mean it is right.

Indeed we've had lots of stupid laws (and still do), from the Texas law that made sodomy a capital crime to the Jim Crow laws to the laws that restricted access to video games, or rock and roll, or erotica. Assuming laws are right just because they are laws counts as an appeal to tradition, or an appeal to authority. Neither have merit as they are not based on improving/protecting society and just allows abuse-corruption.

Just because there is a law doesn't mean it should be obeyed. Given that the fairness of a law is only challenged in the justice system, after someone disobeys it. Granted, this brings to risk penal consequences, but again, in civilized justice, consequences must be proportional to the degree of offense.

What about all the times you broke the law-ever jay walked you just broke the law and went against the gov and society you could have been responsible for an accident that killed people how much jail time do you deserve-what about piracy ever did that well you're basically stealing so it would be perfectly fine to give you jail for a year or two.For christ sake stop clapping and laughing mindlessly over this people your being irritating.

Showing once again that these people just don't have any pattern recognition. I mean, really. What dumbasses. You mess around with computers and screw around with your GREAT custom job machine, and...what? You don't think that police, government agents, etc. don't have MUCH better hardware and software, plus better training? How shall I put this?

D'OH!

It's like watching one of those endearing comedy shows where some hardcase or pain in the ass makes trouble for the protagonist(s), and then at the end of the episode (WHOOPSEE!) something karmic or hilarious happens and blows up in the face of the aggressor, leading to a sudden and immediate downfall. It's not even surprising, really. We're just waiting to laugh at the punchline. Like this:

Have fun, boys! We have come full circle and the proverbial pie is on your faces. LAUGH. OUT. LOUD. Funny...

idarkphoenixi:
Not that they don't deserve it but how exactly did they get caught? Didn't they take any safety measures?

Well , yeah. But that suggests that they all told the group leader 'everything'. Not the smartest internet vigilantes that I've seen.

If I were a member I'd treat everyone there as if they were a possible informant.

Maybe it's because they caused damage to property (hundreds of thousands of dollars), stole THOUSANDS of credit cards, threatened people, released private phone numbers, personal details (such as addresses, phone numbers, names, etc.) of the ENTIRE application list to the X Factor TV show, and other such things.

If they were "just hacking", then we never would have heard of them.

Wait, what did I miss? What exactly did they do to "endanger lives"?

Hell, what did they do to deserve nearly 2 years of jail time? DDoS some sites and steal protected data for shits and giggles? Slap them on the wrist then.

The targeted companies should be thanking them for exposing the fact that they have terrible network security protocols. Apparently they hacked the FBI and CIA; lulz security indeed.

apprently you missed the 'lively hoods' part of my post.

But since you don't seem to know, lemme fill you in.

EVERYTHING LOLSEC DID WAS ILLEGAL. It's doesn't matter WHY they broke in, they still broke in to a secured server and posted peoples info on line (thus causing a threat to a persons lively hood)

they aren't heroes, they're common gutter trash, no better then a thief who throw a brick threw a window

I wonder what the deal for Monsegur was when they flipped him...I'll be surprised if he actually serves any real time, though if they used the "We're taking the kids away!" routine he's likely going to see some sort of prison time.

Lulzsec laughed their collective asses off for being stupid enough to get caught.

It was smart to plead guilty, but I have a feeling prosecution scared the shit out of them with threats of what punishment they'd get if it was not-guilty.

Though "indecent images of babies and children." legalspeak says that it wasn't CP or loli, probably guro for shock threads.

I didn't ask whether you cared, and I certainly didn't ask for you to give them sympathy or compassion. Though would be nice if you could reign in the sociopathic tendencies that would lead you to cheer on rape, however.

Also, something that has already been pointed out, they never "endangered lives" or "lively hoods" for laughs. They dicked around and brought down a few sites for a short period, and got some sensitive information, what's next, we give pirates the death sentence? After all, they're taking away profits, endangering lively hoods and lives! Your attitude conforms to this ridiculous precedent which is being set that cyber crimes are somehow worse than things like assault. (For which someone can get less jail time than these guys, who essentially boil down to a couple of hyped up internet trolls.) and I can't say I particularly care about them, I do however care about the amount of jail time, and this "rape is ok if they're baddies" view that some people seem to be adopting. You don't seem to realise that this is how things snow ball, greater punishments for smaller crimes, based on what the government deems as criminal, not society. I seriously doubt any of these guys hurt anyone at all, even through the actions, mostly they just wasted peoples time through illegal methods.

To put this in perspective, this is like someone committing petty theft (1 year jail time and/or fine.) and then defacing a billboard (1 year jail time and/or fine.) Except not as severe (Copying not stealing, no requirement to replace. Denial of service, not defacing, once they stop, that's it.)

HA HA!!!

good to see these little hacker shit are going away for a few years from the look of it, maybe some time with their new boy firends will teach them to not do this kinda crap again

They hack some places, and you're cheering at the idea they'll get raped in prison?

Ladies and gentlemen, everything wrong with the current mentality for prison in one sentence.

they hacked some place, laughed about it and Dared people to come after them like they where some kind of gods, for their arrogance they deserve everything they're going to get.

No, I don't have any sympathy for people like this whom break laws and laugh about it like its a game.

Still man, it's not like they've destroyed occupied buildings, burned down hospitals, or punched puppies. The hacked a bunch of websites and mildly inconvenienced people and then gained an ego from it. I'm not saying they deserve sympathy, but laughing about how a bunch of nerds are going to get horribly raped in prison is INCREDIBLY vicious considering what these guys did was VERY minor on the whole.

For reference, this is a statement coming from someone who considers Happy Tree Friends hilarious.

Eh, In a weird way, they exposed some flaws in the security of major companies with a few basic tricks without doing anything seriously harmful. Silver lining.

And i'm sure none of them will serve their full sentence.

Damn it. Despite everything else, Sabu is the only one I'm mad at. Is there no honor among thieves?

Simple thought exercise: What if all these guys were, in fact, women? Would you still be cheering for them to get sexually assaulted in prison? Would they then 'deserve' it?

These guys deserve to go to jail, but if getting sexually assaulted while you're in prison is part of it then it is cruel and unusual punishment. The fact that people think it is utterly hilarious that guys could end up getting raped in prison is horribly disgusting. The only reason I'd even BEGIN TO THINK that was remotely justified is if they were actually rapists, and even that's going too far.

That depends, do I get to watch the security tapes?

But in all seriousness their gender means nothing to me I would still make those type of comments. We are joking about it though because its funny to laugh at criminals. The actual chances of these guys getting raped in prison is pretty dam low. Especially since they are gonna end up in a minimum security prison where the worse offender is probably gonna be some guy in there for assault. You really need to stop taking comments like these seriously.

While, of course, I don't want them to be raped in prison or anything ludicrously barbaric like that, it's good to see them getting gaol time.

I cannot stand people patting themselves on the back for sticking it to "the man" when they've defined "the man" as anyone they feel like making trouble for.

Everybody "joking" about "hoping they get raped in prison lol" needs to have their tongue pulled out by the roots. Shut your stupid little juvenile mouth.

Man, the rape jokes in this thread just make me queasy. Grow up, people. They may be criminals and they may be idiots, but at no point is it right to wish rape on someone, even as a joke. You're worse than the people in the subject of this news posts.

OT: Well, I'm not surprised. They dared the authorities. Nobody is invincible, and you shouldn't think so even if you've got 20 proxies to hide behind.

Well the brave leader wasn't so brave was he? He almost immediately sold the lives of others just to get off scot-free. So much for being anti-establishment. At least if you do actions that are anti-establishment or are making statements, at least stick to your guns. Basically the leader traded 8 years of (collectively added) punishment for his maximum of 5.

That said, do these hackers really deserve what they have going for them? I have been hacked, and seen 2 years of my childhood liquidated just because i knew nothing of internet scams or the like.(Neopets) I have nothing but contempt for such people who profit at the loss of others' and are proud about such actions. This especially when it is not part of the game(so EVE online is excused) and more so when hacking tools are involved(griefing in minecraft or hacking bnet accounts.) Taking the lives of people away, no matter in how small portions, adds up. The idea is that you absorb the time and thus lives of others, and that's little better than the idea of paying taxes to a government that doesn't protect you at all in return, instead simply profiting off your little contributions.

The short answer is no. Taking an eye for an eye is deterrent, but there is more to it than that. Why are we even doing such things for profit? Why is cheating inherent in human society? The answer is very complex and I don't want to derail the thread, but I feel it's how we are so skewed towards capitalism(which tells us to quantify all our achievements). There is no merit if there is no profit; that's the short answer to the truth.

I have never seen a forum more serious or even constructive that talks actively about video games than the escapist forums. Don't dilute the efforts of others in wanting to engage in certain topics which, sadly, the masses feel are valid feelings. Torching the criminals, slaying the adulterer are all bad things to apply to others but even so, it feels that such actions are justified.

Don't type inflammatory or joking comments in a serious forum without first clarifying it's a joke. There's a place for everything, and the place for such jokes is the comments section of IGN or even twitter. The forum guidelines clearly state the rules that all posts should be done with constructive contribution in mind(or something like that) so if you hit that post button, please be serious, or at least lets us know you're not.

I'm certainly not going to weep any bitter tears for them; they were a bunch of jerks throwing fireworks into the crowd for kicks. But I have to confess I find myself just slightly put off by the prosecutor's whole "cutting edge cybercriminals" line. That kind of comment sounds less like making an important distinction than the beginning of a stump speech urging harsher punishments for hackers... and I'm not at all convinced the people on the prosecution side of all such cases would be the good guys.

I don't know you past your postings on this site, nor have I had a desire to expand past that, and even then your not some one who's opinion I value in the least, much like almost every one else on this site, there's a few people I'll listen to, but you aren't one of them.

And you think telling me to 'shut up' cause you don't like what I'm saying is going to get me to comply? Really? That's 'interesting'

I've already washed my hands of this thread, I've said everything I've intended to say, be it right or wrong is for you to mull and eventually get over, I'm nether changing anything said or apologizing for it, as I'm not beholden to you, or any other poster on this site.

Think they were cocky because they were not arrested quick. Mainly thats due to police/FBI taking time to collect evidence and see they are talking to and if they could lead to others in the group. Wonder if in prison all the other prisoners started doing stuff to them and told them "i did it for the lulz". :-)

Unfortunately not, they will do their time in a prison that looks like this.

Hey, that top one looks like Yorkshire!

Are you sure they'll get category Ds? Often you end up moving around multiple prisons: a stay in a B or C (something like the second one), then moved to a D for release (the one in the top picture).

Either way, I can't imagine them enjoying their stay much. The worst part about (UK) prisons are the perpetual boredom and the infliction upon dignity and independence.

Wow, and for a second it looked as though you were against people who exhibit self-absorbed behaviour.

I'm all for criminal justice, but advocating the sexual torture of people in prison is absolutely morally abhorrent, especially (and I hesitate to use the word especially because the standard should be applied to all offenders) against those who have committed non-violent crimes.

I cannot fully express just how jaded, unfair, immoral, sadistic and wrong it is to un-ironically hope for rape to be committed on non-violent offenders, as if their being in prison somehow makes it ok, and then furthermore to react negatively and antagonistically when someone reminds you to be a human being . Should they continue to be raped once they get out of prison? Or is the get-out-of-rape-free card only supposed to extend for the length of the court order?

Just incredible. Just unbelievable.
