A useful guide to what is not acceptable on these forums, and of course what is. Clear concise and well written.

Thanks a lot for putting up our section Krunk! Hopefully it'll educate the masses as planned.

Updates Ahoy!

20/2/10: Added 'Trolling' subtopic, with the aid of Sevre90210 and Higurashi. Also caved in and added Varchld to the Mod List.

Damn, I hope this stays strictly serious business, there'll be no room for the lexicon by the time it gets up and running.

Very helpful. Thanks for the clarification on a few topics i was a little dubious on:)

Thanks a lot for putting this up. I'm still rather new to the Escapist site, and even newer to the forum section.

I have to say this is probably the most mature and reasoned forum experience I've had.. I would mention the partcular site where I encountered a lot of irritations, but that's for another time. The main problem I had were the "Forum vigilantes" ; that is, "good citizens" *coughsbusybodiescoughs* would become confused and think that *they* were the Moderators. Cue a massive dose of the flaming all round.

I haven't seen a speck of that since I joined, thankfully. Really helpful and informative.
I was tempted to type in "was banned", but at this stage that's be a bit hackneyed :P

It's rather scary to think that common sense seems to be prevailing in this part of the internet! ;)

Very helpful. I now know exactly what to do to pi... I mean, now I know how to behave =D

Lord Krunk:

Thanks for the advice. Fucking love your avatar, by the way.

Wow, I really have to be careful of what I say on these boards

Just looking at the people replying to this thread I see trails of bans and suspension.

I come from wow forums where they are way more lax on bans and suspensions.

Still Im hoping for a cleaner board and so far the escapist seems very nice.

The thread where the guy got banned was something else though.

What's that I see on the horizon? A bird? A plane?

No, AN UPDATE!

28/3/10: Removed Ultrajoe from the Mod list.

When and why did UJ stop being a mod? Did he not have time, or did he make a bad call? Any idea, Lord Krunk?

Ultrajoe, From The Escapism 2010 Thread:
After playing far too much God of War III, I tried to kill my way up through the pantheon of Escapist staff for no discernible reason apart from boredom. Their power was too great however, and despite my own legendary Ultraness and Chaingun-Chaingun superweaponry, I was defeated. Our battle was so impressive and incredible that to fully comprehend it you basically need to freebase thermite while standing in the middle of a fireworks display atop a concert where Deadpool, Darth Vader, The Terminator and some Space Marines play Beatles tunes.

I am no longer a Moderator.

On a more factual note, I was not 'Fired', 'Sacked', 'Laid-Off' or 'Deposed' or in any way removed from the position due to any disgruntled or unpleasant feelings between myself and the Staff. I still talk with them and the other Mods. As for the actual details, that's for me to know and you to forever be less than a man for not knowing.

That's all the info I ever got.

Haha!
I knew he wasn't kidding when he told me his plan to ban Yahtzee all those months ago! ;)

Simalacrum:
its the Escapists edition of the Wasteland survival guide! :D

oh by the way, one thing i've noticed is that people who put the first posts on Yahtzee's video - related threads (the official "thread to go with the video" stuff) tend to be on probabtion or suspended... yet when I check why they've been put on probabtion/suspension (maybe even ban?), a lot of the time the posts are completely innocent... they just happen to be some of the first posts on a yahtzee-video thread.

does anyone know why this is? just a curiosity

Frequently because they post before they could have possibly finished watching the movie. After all, you can hardly form an opinion when the title sequence hasn't finished playing yet.

OT, this certainly is a welcome addition to the forums. Incidentally, your little message at the bottome just about made me start my own "Mods are evil" thread until I hit the quote button to check.

Sorry a friend was a douche, the Probation thing was an April Fools Joke

Oh well, I;m sure UJ has his reasons. On another note, Damn we need some serious Ban-Hammering lately. :|

Oh the sweet, sweet irony of the first post.
OT, this is pretty complete, and there should be a link to it on the front page, and should be part of the sign-up process.

Ziadaine:

Don't worry, it happens every March/April for obvious reasons. The reaction last year was to add a truckload more Mods, and it might need to happen again this time around.

When did Ultrajoe get Mod status removed

From what I know, late March (about the 28th, according to the dates of those posts).

Tis sad I did not look into that thread before, alas I shall wait for a new moderator to take his place.

Ultrajoe is no longer a Mod?

Ah well, I shall still look upon his Account with Respect, unless he somehow gets Banned (Again if I'm not mistaken)

Well, actually...

I chose my username because it is also my cybernations name but now "rightwingisgood" just makes me sound like I'm a raving nutter, could someone please tell me how to either change my username or get it changed?

You can actually change your name by going to your profile and clicking on the link that says "Update Account Information". You can then change your username, but you only get to change your username once so make sure you like it.

thank you ^^

Great guide, thanks for all the tips, hopefully with this I'll at least be able to get up to the Trinity badge. Although I do have a question, why does the OP say "User banned for this post"?

Just having fun with BB Code.

Very helpful. Now that I know what's kosher... TO THE FORUMS!!!

I found this thread to be very helpful.

Lord Krunk:

Firstly, I will explain the lowest form of moderator wrath:

Warnings: Tier 4

Warnings are not a form of Moderator Wrath, as such, but a warning that is placed on your user record for further reference, should you break said rule you were warned about again. This can happen on the thread in which you have posted on, or via PM - be advised that these are generally given if the crime was not intentional, or merely an obvious mistake (in judgement or otherwise) made by the user.

[snip]

Please note that once you receive any form of moderator wrath, then these badges will be unavailable to you. Harsh, but fair.

Also note that having a thread of yours locked does not result in your inability to receive the badges.

Slight clarification, warnings shouldn't remove any badges. They are essentially a way of sending a moderator private message that saves a note on the user's profile as well.

I have a question for the people who read this post. Is the following true?

(Sample questions based on the Hit with Axe show comments)

You cannot call anyone you see in an Escapist video an "airhead", nor can you comment on them being "not naked", nor can you choose to define a female who clearly states (in several escapist videos) that they are a porn star as "one who has sex for money while being filmed."

Is this is like the 1920's, if you say something that people don't like, you will be punished? Is there no real method to this, or is it assumed, to be excepted, when you agree to the terms and conditions, that the user has no right to comment at all on a video?

Define 'inappropriate comments made about people in a video' please.

What kind of website has porn stars, in a weekly video, that doesn't let people talk about how they are porn stars?? Why is it ok for them to say it, but not ok for the ones who post? Or is this just a site that doesn't let people call others airheads if they act like an airhead? (if name calling is the issue, the mods have a lot of catching up to do)

Last I checked, airhead isn't a curse word, nor is it inappropriate. When someone chooses to video moments were they display them self as : A silly, rather unintelligent person. What else should we describe it as?

After reading some of the posts that people have been banned/put on probation/what ever else you want to put in red letters.... I have found I clearly don't know what is ok to say, and what is not. I know that people who post are not allowed to say similar things that those in videos say (lets look at any other weekly regular besides Zero punctuation, because Yahtzee is untouchable, but any other video proves my point just as much). I don't think forum posters should be held in the same light as forum contributors, but how else can I compare this idea? So I really want to understand where the line is drawn.

Please help me to understand the rules, clearly the forum posting guidelines are insufficient.

Yeah, my brother is banned from posting on this site now, and I want to find out why. So yes, this is personal to me.

(I am not actually a moderator, just a long-term user who is very familiar with the moderation system here.)

Vodka Dude:
Define 'inappropriate comments made about people in a video' please.

It all comes down to how you phrase it.

Take, for example, these comments (they are what caused this update to be added to the posting guidelines). There's a difference between stating "That person has nice tits" and "That person is pretty" - a difference quantified by the offence it causes to the person being talked about. Similarly, talking about someone's prior career in the pornography industry then going on to insult their intelligence is not appropriate behaviour because it is going to offend the people appearing in the video. Moreover, in what context is it ever appropriate to discuss why a former porn actress isn't naked at any given moment?

If you would not say something to a person's face, do not post it in the comments section of a video they appeared in.

Edit: Actually, case in point:

Satine Phoenix:
We ARE actual real people. And we read these posts. And when you say things like that, they actually do hurt. We're just having fun playing D&D. Why are you guys being such Jerks about it. It's not like its YOUR game. AND most of you who are commenting don't even like playing D&D, so why would you want to watch people play D&D?

~Satine Phoenix

Please help me to understand the rules, clearly the forum posting guidelines are insufficient.

Clearly insufficient? No. The posting guidelines may seem somewhat insubstantial, yes, but that is because they were written under the assumption that anyone reading them would be mature enough for clearly outlined rules to be unnecessary. The only absolute rule about posting here is "Use common sense".

I recommend sending a private message to Kuliani (The Escapist community manager) if you have any further queries.

Thanks. This really helped. I was put on Probation and thought I should look over the guidelines again.

Thanks for this thread.
