The Best FPS Ever . . . so far.

Counter-Strike: Source.

Also; UT2004, Battlefield 3.

Gimme the original Unreal any day, hands down.

I also really like the first two Medal of Honor titles on the PS1. Damn fun, them.

No idea. So instead I'm going to say BioShock because its the first FPS on my short list of best games for explaining art in games list.

Serious Sam: The Second Encounter. The ORIGINAL version that actually had the funky gravity tricks in it. It was all downhill when Croteam switched to a third-party physics engine that could only handle linear gravity.

Close second: Borderlands. It did something different, and I liked finding a really insane gun every now and then.

Third place, the original Duke Nukem. Yeah, I know.

Those were my Top 3 single-player FPS games. If we're talking multiplayer, it goes Natural Selection, EyE: Divine Cybermancy, Who Gives A Shit About Most Multiplayer FPS Games.

Last place for me is all 47 games in the Metal of Duty series. Especially Metal Of Duty 23: Brown Helix.

As a side note, I would just like to say, where the hell does Sniper Elite V2 get off making "kill Hitler" a DLC? Used to be, if you bought a WWII shooter, you KNEW Hitler was the last boss, right out of the box!

And not just any Hitler! Zombie Robot Hitler! D:<

Oh, how we've fallen... -_-

For me it's Quake II. I played the hell out of that game. DOOM is a close second, but Quake II has it. Old-school id hasn't been topped, in my opinion.

Ill go with the Killzone series. Though Half Life does come in at a close second.

Singleplayer, half life 2, Multiplayer BF2

F.E.A.R., F.E.A.R. Perseus Mandate, F.E.A.R. 2, because I played them to advance the story.

The first F.E.A.R game.

Creepy atmosphere, fantastic graphics and the best enemy A.I I've ever seen. Probably the most fun I've had with a single-player FPS.

Quake I - original setting, benchmark raising graphics, polygons in a world of sprites, intense game play, great weapons, dark & moody gothic world, simply revolutionary multiplayer architecture, brown before it was "cool", and this:

Team Fortress 2 wins easily.
1) I love it to death
2) It's the only FPS game I play and the only one I have played at length since way back to Goldeneye

Sixcess:
Doom/Doom II. Even after nearly 20 years no other FPS delivers the kind of fast paced run and gun action that Doom does to perfection, and given the way the genre has evolved it's doubtful any ever will.

Painkiller, Hard Reset and Serious Sam do off the top of my head.

BENZOOKA:
Counter-Strike: Source.

Also; UT2004, Battlefield 3.

Mhee, i would agree with u, love em... but i suck at those :(

Timesplitters 2 and Future Perfect. They are both different and yet both great.

Other games on my top list are Halo:CE, Serious Sam (it does what it is supposed to do incredibly well), Unreal 2004, STALKER and Call of Duty 4.

Half-Life 2, Team Fortress 2, any Metroid Prime, Bioshock, Counter-strike,

Clive Barker's: Undying & Jericho (for the settings and atmosphere)

Bioshock 1 & 2 (For the story, setting and atmosphere)

Borderlands (Pure for the fun and loot and co-op)

AvP 2 (AvP-universe kicks ass! This was the best adaptation to it.)

Metroid Prime (The music and it's Metroid! Wish it could come over to PS3 because Nintendo sucks! My Gamecube died in like 3 or 4 months)

Descent (First fps I ever owned. A classic and great for the time it was released!)

Team Fortress 2. Let's just say that there's a reason why I've logged hundreds of hours into it.

Single player: Entire Half-Life series (excluding Blue Shift, Opposing Force and Decay), DOOM 2.
Multiplayer: CS:S, TF2, BF3, Q3.

Each is top in it's specific target FPS style.

Sooo many good choices, but I have to settle on Doom. I played the shareware version when it first came out and it was an entertaining game to say the least. Now back in '08, I finally got around to playing the rest of Doom 1 and all of Doom 2, and I could not have been more entertained. It seems impossible that the first genuine stab (I'm not counting Wolfenstien and its always lit and always 6-foot high corridors a true attempt) at making a first-person game would have been the best, but there just aren't any other games that I feel like cruising around in as if I'm playing Windows Solitaire on some down-time. Somehow, Doom is just perfect.

Edit: I can't let this post go without throwing a few other names out. Just like Doom, they set out and accomplished something and accomplished it well, just as Doom did. Their only drawback is they aren't as instantly digestible as Doom is.

Heretic
Half-life
Team Fortress 2
Bioshock
Deus Ex
Jedi Knight (I can't say no to force powers)
Thief (not a shooter, but I'm counting it anyway for being first-person and awesome)
UT 2004
Borderlands
Morrowind (if I'm sneaking Thief in this list, I think this can get in too)

Resistance fall of man has the best atmosphere out of all the FPS I have played. So there is that Half life and pain killer are also fun but don't have the same level of atmosphere. As for multiplayer I don't know.

Hard to tell... I love the Killzone, Resistance and CoD series, but oddly enough, just a couple of weeks ago I replayed Wolfenstein 3D from start to finish and enjoyed it immensely, so I'm giving the award to that game, for being consistently fun for the two decades I've known it.

Normally I would say Halo: Reach. Now here is the kicker.

Right now...I am going to say Counter Strike. I have never played Counter Strike mind you, but it is going to be my answer.

Long have I wanted to play CSS, but had a shitier than shit computer. Now that I have a decent laptop and I am ready for Counter Strike: Global Offensive. My friends love it, people I look up to say its the best FPS. So I have to agree with them. CSS is probably the best FPS out there.

This is a highly opinionated question that no one can answer with 100% backing. So keep that in mind. I just think CSS, is a highly balanced, interesting, fun, competitive and popular FPS that would ATLEAST make it into the top 5 of the worlds opinion.

I'm just a human though and I am subject to make mistakes.

urban terror :D

Well anyone that knows me knows that my favorite game of all time is the original Deus Ex... So that's my answer... it was so unique and ahead of it's time... it's the perfect melding of FPS action, tactical stealth and roleplaying elements... even to this day the approach to interactive storytelling is rivaled by few...<.<

The only problem is that it's aged like ass...

With Modding: Unreal 99' or UT2004.
Ridiculous variety between the two of them, and they are very strong entries just on their own (UT3...less so).

Without Modding: That's a bit tougher...games that stand solely on their own merits.

SWAT 4 and Tribes 2 are pretty damn glorious in their own ways.

Half-Life 2 has some truly excellent level design.
Left4Dead is probably the best zombie game there is, period.
Borderlands is just excellent in general.

I omitted Deus Ex and System Shock 2, because while they use first person controls and have firearms, calling them strict shooters is just misleading.

For MP - CSS wins hands down imo for competitive gaming, TF2 for non-competitive gaming.

For SP - i'd go with others and say Deus Ex, but i've never really considered it as a straight up FPS, and there's no real standout from recent years, so i'll go with.....Soldier of Fortune, just for something different in the thread.

Halo 2
Call of Duty 4
Unreal Tournament 2004

Halo 2 is my 2nd favorite game of all-time (behind Warcraft 3). The skill-cap on Halo 2 multiplayer was incredibly high considering it's a console shooter. Obviously it was one of the most important games ever as well. It basically put online console multiplayer on the map.

Star Trek Voyager: Elite Force!

In all seriousness, Halo Reach.

By the fraction of a whisker I'd have to say Halo: Combat Evolved. With Perfect Dark and Half-Life following closely behind. I used to think Goldeneye 64 was all that, until I played it more recently.

If the Thief series counted, they'd be right up there too.

DJjaffacake:
Call of Duty 4, at least of the games I've played. Killzone 2 and 3 are good as well, so good taste for you.

I second this...and now I feel like playing Killzone 3 again, which I haven't touched since a few weeks after its release.

I find mainstream military shooters boring and laughable after playing this.

This man is correct. For a more up to date game (in regards to graphics and military technology) ArmA2: Combined Arms is a good alternative, but the overall feel is nowhere near as good as this blocky masterpiece from 2001.

Mainly Arma 2's single player can't compare to OFP's legendary campaign.

i love this game. i spent..... like 400 or so hours playing it.

Atmospheric / Hybrid FPS: Deus Ex & System Shock 2
Classic / Overall: DOOM / DOOM II
Multiplayer: Tribes 2

Never should one of the dozens upon dozens of current-generation clones be listed in a "Best of..." list ever. Call of Duty or Battlefield being listed anywhere in the title are reason for instant disqualification. Also, the Halo series is severely overrated.

Obviously, I'm stuck in the past as far as games of the FPS genre are concerned as the most recent game on my list came out in 2001, but oh well.

Multiplayer: UT2004. Screw modern military FPS's, give me the good 'ol days with unique guns, super-fast movement and insane dodging moves, and an even balance between vehicles and ground troops.

Singleplayer: Half Life 2. Self Explanatory.

For multiplayer I have to go with Battlefield 2142, Titan Mode is the absolute best, plus the balance is really good.

For single player...

You look like you need a monkey.
Excuse me?
I have a very fine monkey for you. Only twenty dollars, American.
Sorry, I don't want a monkey.
What do you mean?
I don't want a monkey!
Why not?
Because I don't like monkeys, now get that filthy beast away from me!
Are you insulting my monkey?
I'm sure it's a perfectly excellent monkey, but I don't want it. Now please leave, I'm very busy.
Ten dollars.
No! I wouldn't want the dreadful thing even if it were free!
Free? You want my children to starve?
If they're hungry, I suggest you feed them the monkey.
This is a valuable monkey! My wife would kill me if she knew I was offering it to you so cheap.
You don't seem to understand, I DON'T WANT A MONKEY!
Infidel.

The one the only No One Lives Forever.

Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth, its awesome until you get a gun after that it is just good.

Oh god, how could I forget NOLF! I recognized that conversation by the second line. That series actually depressed me, because by the time I finished NOLF 2, I knew there weren't any more coming. Ever.
