Poll: Let's Get Some Honesty, Shall We? (Regarding Big Breasts/Sexy Female Game Characters)

 Pages 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 NEXT

Alright, seems everyone still has their panties in a bunch over the whole Big Boobs in Gaming thing, in particular with regards to a certain caster class in a game called Dragon's Crown. The purpose of this poll is just as the topic's title says: a search for some honesty. Specifically: is it REALLY that big of a deal for a female character to be designed with a sexy figure? To have big bouncing breasts that jiggle with every step she takes? Are game designers completely missing the mark by continuing to design female characters that way? Or are they actually justified in doing so because a lot of people like it?

Feel free to leave a comment if you want, but I'm hoping the anonymity of the poll - allowing you to just click an option and move on with no one else seeing what you voted for - will indeed bring out honest answers. Are you complaining about it just because everyone else is and you don't wanna look like a chauvinistic pig in front of your peers? Or do you REALLY have a huge problem with sexy female characters in games?

Like I just said in another thread, it's ok if a female character looks attractive or sexy. It's when the character's whole design is designed around looking sexy without it having any connection to her character, or without her having much of a character at all, and when she's stuffed into skimpy outfits that are highly impractical if she's a front line fighter, and the sheer fact that characters like that are all over the place...well...THAT is what bugs me.

It's not offensive, it's just really fucking stupid.

Honestly, when I see a female character with big floppy breasts or boobs with individual physics to where it looks like two aliens trying to escape from their fleshy prison I just roll my eyes. It doesn't really matter to me if it makes sense from the aesthetics or not, that's just my reaction.

That said, I'm not offended by it. I will still play the game, and that won't ruin my enjoyment of the game. Even though I think it's a little stupid, but then again I love Bayonetta because it's fully aware of what it is, so make of that what you will.

Sexy females are overused, sure. I'd like more ugly and monstrous females. (Along with females who are stupid, lazy and evil. These traits are almost overwhelmingly given to males)

But sexy females are not offensive to me (and it wouldn't matter if they were). I certainly enjoy quite a few games with sexy females in them, but I can't say the sexiness itself was a major draw, but I don't know for sure. Perhaps I'm being disingenuous.

To me, Bayonetta and Dante from Devil May Cry are of similar sexiness, but I'm only actually attracted to one of them... and it isn't the one with big boobs. So, *shrug*

Cheers!

No, I honestly don't like the prevailing trend in female character design.

I wouldn't say it "offends" me, I just think it's shit. Like putting tomato in a toasted ham and cheese sandwich.

Look, I'm male and I'm straight and my sexual interests aren't particularly far from the norm. I have no objection to breasts in general. Quite the opposite, I happen to rather like a good pair of breasts. Although I'm not really a fan of huge ones. It's the shape that matters, not the sheer mass. Also, hips are great too. Everyone seems to forget about hips and skip straight to the a... err... where was I? Right. Games. Ahem.

I'm of the opinion that if I want titillation then, well... this is the internet age. There are countless naked breasts a mere two clicks away. And I don't have to play up to level seven to see them.

I don't think I've ever been turned on by a video game character anyway. I can think, "Oh, Character X is pretty" or is at least intended to be pretty, but at the end of the day all that fancy breast physics is essentially lost on me. There's no point in lusting after a collection of polygons and pixels. Besides, chances are I'm too busy trying to line up headshots or maintain a combo to whip it out mid-game.

I would honestly prefer interesting, well characterized, varied etc etc female characters to the current crop of half-dressed, improbably jiggly damsels. Of course there's no reason why the two can't coexist in separate games, but if it was a choice between one or the other, I would happily throw all the fanservice in the bin for some more decent bloody female characters.

Maybe that makes me an anomaly. Maybe every other 15-30 year old male gamer is too busy licking his screen while playing Dead or Alive to care, but I doubt it.

Am I just thinking/saying this to fit in? I don't think so. Not consciously at least. Would I know if I was?

As for not wanting to be labelled a pig... well, actually, these days it feels like I'm more likely to be branded a wannabe "white knight" out to score by waving my progressive card.

I've never really understood the fascination with huge, jiggling breasts. I like bosoms as much as the next guy, and appreciate everything from A-D, but these small planets just strike me as...I dunno...juvenile?

I mean, if they're going to pander, they could at least pander to my TASTES, damn it.

I consider this topic a success purely because it got this large of a response from you. Usually in most topic you tend to post just a couple lines that are short, sweet, and to the point. :P

I get where you're coming from though, as that's pretty much the case for me: if the game is as engaging as it should be, then you really shouldn't "have time" to even notice the character models that much. Marvel vs Capcom 3 has a lot of ladies in it, but if you stop to look at Felecia's.....bounciness....then you're going to get destroyed.

I just made this topic because it seems like every other topic on this subject is full of people that are disgusted/offended by it all. So I'm just trying to find out if it's REALLY that big of a deal, which is what the purpose of the 3rd poll option is.

I see nothing wrong with big breasts... except when they're the ONLY kind.

Also, the Sorceress's are kinda gross.

Oh, and looks like Senran Kagura Burst's getting localized, so this debate's about to start all over again!

I'm not particularly fond of games with female characters like that, but I realise those kind of games are not for me, so I won't complain.

It doesn't normally offend me, but Dragon's Crown takes boob size well past sexy, through ugly, straight to outright deformity. The total lack of class does not help. It's the crassest exploitation I've seen in a game. Nothing attractive is going on here.

I don't see anything wrong with having attractive characters in a game. But game developers seem to forget that anorexics in stripper-wear are not the sole form of attractiveness possible.

Thing about Tits is; Tits are awesome, more Tits are awesomer and yet even MORE Tits can only lead to an equivalent amount of awesomness.

Take the new Tomb Raider, personally id say it pips Uncharted 1 and 3, and is close enough to uncharted 2 to smell its farts, what was missing? What would have given it the edge it needed, I mean really think about it. Tit PhysX. Those boys were static and it wasn't fair because the animations were top notch. Crystal dynamics need to step that shit up on the PS4 version. Individual Tit PhysX.

I like me some sexy female game characters. I can't help it, I'm a guy. That being said, it shouldn't excuse a character from lacking a personality. Bayonetta for example, is a pretty sexualized and exaggerated character, at the same time though, she's humorous, likes to poke fun at people, and she kicks serious ass. She straights up conjures a giant hair monster that punches the final boss so hard, the boss flies straight into the sun.

Also, the chick from Dragon's Crown's boobs are a bit too big for my liking.

I don't think it's so much disgust your seeing as it is frustration and weariness. With how much companies use sex to sell and advertise games, I think there's a chunk of the gaming audience that has finally reached their breaking point and feels like they are being treated like horny teenagers that can't appreciate something unless it is shoving titillation and sex in your face every couple of minutes.

I'll agree with Zhukov here, I'm a heterosexual male and I love sexy looking women. If nothing else I can appreciate big breasts, ample hips, a pretty face, and so on and so forth. Hell, I even like seeing sexy women in games, characters like Chun Li, and Morrigan are eye candy, and back in the day I enjoyed that kind of thing quite a bit. But, I'm tired now, most times when I see it used poorly in a game now I'm just exasperated, it makes me sound like an old man, but every time I see a character who is being contorted into improbable positions just to show off their breasts and butt at the same time, or has anatomy that would make Jessica Rabbit green with envy, I just feel a little more burned out. Why does so much of what I love have to constantly try to arouse me, I just want to play a video game, is it too much to ask for a little variety. I'm still perfectly fine with sexualization when it fits a theme or is a fleshed out part of a character, but gratuitously using it just desensitizes me a little more day by day, what I once used to find exciting and attractive, now just bores me from overuse.

Is it too much to ask to get just a little variety, even if it's just physically, maybe a couple scars, some blemishes, a face that doesn't look like it fell off the cover of a playboy magazine, some functional androgynous armor, I know asking for a great improvement in characterization is a bit much to expect all at once, but maybe just some physical variety to start with, we can even work on improving some male cliches as well while we're at it.

I think it's become such a hot issue recently because people are finally starting to speak out on it, and the majority of people who felt the same for a long time, but never spoke up are finally coming out and realizing that it isn't a topic that they are alone on. I know I've been frustrated with the endless bombardment of pointless tits and ass for 6 or 7 years now, but I never really talked about it, because I never really saw anyone else talking seriously about it until a year or two ago. People (both male and female) have probably been frustrated and disappointed for years now, but until the recent blowups there's never really been any momentum behind that building frustration, and now that there is, people who were once quiet are now venting years of pent up annoyance and criticism they once kept to themselves.

Unfortunately, this does lead to misfires, Dragon's Crown probably didn't deserve a lot of the vitriol thrown at it, but it's just a symptom of a lot of people finally finding an outlet for years of discomfort and alienation. It's not just video games, especially for the young male demographic, we are bombarded by sex from almost every angle, I see sex in commercials, t.v., movies, comics, books, sports, and video games, it just gets more and more boring with each passing day, to the point where my first thought upon seeing the head female scientist in the new XCOM game was, "you know I can't remember the last time I saw an older woman in a video game that wasn't and old crone, god I just realized how sad that is".

Honestly, I prefer "realistic" bust size on females in gaming. Yes, it is realistic in this day and age that just about any woman can get a boob job and have giant breasts, but that doesn't appeal to me. I like my woman natural, nothing fake on their body.

As an example, I actually prefer the new Lara Croft over the old exaggerated Lara Croft. But having huge (DOA, Soul Calibur) breasts or very small doesn't deter me from playing the games.

I like sexy characters. The focus lies on characters. I loved Kat and her role in DmC, what she contributed and how she was displayed. And she was sexy.

I can't stand it when you have something that is mostly designed to look sexy and everything else comes second. Clothes that make no fucking sense, the inability to put on pants and so forth. Even if it makes sense in the world it is set in, I don't want to look at this shit. Prime example of the month: Dragon Crown. In my opinion this game is just disguisting (the proportions, poses etc are just too Rob Liefeld for me). But on the other hand, I don't have to play it. Or expose myself to it. So I don't do exactly that.

I roll with Zhukov on this one. If I want 'excitement' I can get it from the sites I visit for such or my porn shelf. Or I just get out and get myself a lass.

Don't care at all, so long as the female character has a purpose apart from being eye-candy and this "LOOK EVERYBODY, TITS ON DISPLAY" thing isn't an overwhelming trend, which I don't believe it is anymore. I guess that depends on what kinds of games you're playing though. Variety is good. So is subtlety in most instances.

Though as for Dragon's Crown in particular...regardless of the fact that the females have their tits hanging out everywhere, I think that art style is utterly unattractive. I'm sure there are some people it appeals to out there, but it seems unlikely that I'm in the minority on this one from the responses I've read in other threads and such. So the women (and men) are simply unappealing in my eyes and, given the gameplay doesn't look like my cup of tea either, I find the game completely uninteresting, even with this so-called scandal going on.

As a gay man, I am kind of averse to having such hypersexualized hetero-normality crammed down my faceholes. The art style in other areas looks nifty. And I might have picked up the game to try it out otherwise.

But it's clear I'm not the target buyer. And I suppose that's fine.

I don't mind it at all, as long as it suits the character. Big breasts for the sake of big breasts isn't somethung I'm into, but I have nothing against them. Of course, I'll readily admit that I;m not in the position to really be offended by them.

I really don't care, as long as the character is more than her boobs and wide hips and narrow waist. As long as she has a real personality beyond being a sex symbol, it's all good. I mean, it's only fair. You have characters like Nathan Drake and such, and even though he's not scantily clad I find him attractive. And then you get into the overly male men like in Gears of War. Same difference as some of the females, I believe.

That wasn't very well said, but I'm sure everyone gets what I mean.

I loved the design of the new Lara Croft. Finally a woman done right in a videogame. She was obviously really pretty but her looks weren't the focus and the developers didn't attempt to put her in 'naughty' poses at every chance they got. Not to mention everything was in proportion. I agree many games have women with such absurd breast sizes that they just look ridiculous. Though in their defense these are usually the games that also don't take themselves(or rather their characters and story) very seriously. However espescially with some Japanese developers I sometimes doubt if they actually have ever seen a real woman naked. The boobs of these chicks in like Ninja Gaiden Sigma look like they defy gravity itself. :p

The problem with the tit service design in most female characters is that it is either completely out of line with the rest of the character cast/environment or it makes no sense to the character of the woman in question.

There is one game I can think of that did it right and it's Bayonetta. She is the literal definition of sex appeal, and yet you hardly hear one peep out of any woman complaining about her. Why? Because everything to her character, her actions, and even her music screams "I'm one fine ass woman and I know it. Oh, and by the way? I'm going to pummel your face into a meat slop"

One example of something that isn't doing it right was that lady in the Solid Snake trailer for Xbone (I'm assuming that is Meryl?) her outfit makes no sense at all. Absolutely none. You have all these people dressed for camouflage and stealth in the desert and your telling me she found it appropriate to wear a black bikini top?
Another example is Ashley.
She is an Alliance soldier to a "T" in ME1 she was dressed appropriately for what she was doing. Proper armor, proper hair length, and proper footwear.
What did they do to her in ME3?
They fattened her lips, gave her hair that is way over the limit for the military, and for some reason she mastered combat in a tight fitting armor suit with high heels.
It was absolutely ridiculous and a disrespect to the character they built up for her. (another list of things against ME3)

Zhukov:
Maybe every other 15-30 year old male gamer is too busy licking his screen while playing Dead or Alive to care, but I doubt it.

Wow way to generalise I like Dead or Alive (well 2,3 and 5 anyway) I dont remember licking the screen though also know who I main? Ayane yup a chick. I also play Soul Calibur I play Siegfried in that but I suppose I should be playing Ivy since shes somehow the face of SC now, most people think SC = Ivy anyway it seems.

As for how female characters are presented I really dont care if they want to give them huge breasts with a cleavage they can ski down thats cool if they want to make them beautiful, ugly, plain, ridiculous, flat, curvy, blue, evil, good, stupid, clever or whatever I have no problem. As long as it fits the game and what you are trying to do thats fine for example April Ryan fits fine in The longest Journey because we get to explore her story as well as learn her character however take away her story and she is pretty boring visually I certainly wouldnt remember her if it wasnt for her excellent story and character and not all games allow the luxury of exploring the character sometimes you just have an image or model and little else because the game is focused more on other things than character development so other ways have to be found to make the character distinctive.

Really I think designers should be allowed to do what they want and then I will decide if I want to buy it same with story or any other choice I mean some games are actually worse for a story in my opinion or at least trying to expand on a story with Street Fighter (2-4) a prime example holy hell that story is bad even for a fighting game less would have been much more there same with Soul Calibur V.

Anyway I dont care what breast size a character has to be honest I dont have a preference and it dosent offend or upset me either.

Look, I'm a heterosexual male, I like boobs of all shapes and sizes. The problem is that lots of games go for "Tits are your motivation" and that annoys me greatly. Give me a reason to love the person behind those ridiculously over-sized funbags.

Although there is a limit. I don't care if you managed to give Ivy the most compelling backstory in any medium on this Earth, the fact that her globes should have their own orbit, the size that they are just throws me off completely.

I voted "in favour" since the options are rather limited. I don't strictly prefer big breasted characters in any media, but I'd rather have attention paid to making them look nice than, y'know, not.

Depends what I'm playing, but usually I prefer boobs to be of realistic proportion to the body or to at least make sense in regards to the content/artstyle.

Give me Tank Girl over Ivy any day. But seriously, sexiness is fine, but a little bit of artistic restraint wouldn't hurt. If it's silly or comedic like it is in Bayonetta or Dragon's Crown (yes, I find the overdone design funny) then i'll laugh. However, when unabashed unsubstantial sex appeal is the whole point of a character rather than any sort of significant substance (character development), therein I will find my knickers in a twist.

I find giant-breasted character design to be gratuitous and distracting (not in an arousing way; just in a personality-devoid way).

They add nothing. They reduce the character; they are the game designer's way of telling you, "this is what the character's really here for, so don't listen to a word she says".

I'm fine with it happening on occasion (just as I'm fine with the occasional uber-sexy bloke character). But the preponderance is absurd, and imbalanced.

To put it simply its not the fact big boobs and skimpy outfits exist causing the hoo-hah, its that it seems to be the default choice for nearly every game that doesn't ignore women entirely. Its kinda tiring to have one specific taste catered for while any other taste gets lip service at best.

I like how peopel talk as if EVERY woman in EVERY game is a sexy big boobed woman . We need diversity , and guess what , we have it . We have games with women that look different . This is a non-issue . For every big breasted woman in a game there is a small breasted woman in another game .

Anyways , we are arguing about the wrong thing . The true problem , is the lack of plus sized women in games . I can't think of one other than the chick in Borderlands 2 and Queen Brahne Raza Alexandros XVI from Final fantasy 9.

Don't get me wrong I love a nice pair of boobies, but when a lot of attention is given to a characters jiggly bits I get rather annoyed.

If we ignore the attitudes and such behind the whole debate, I find such designs thoroughly unappealing. When you have an otherwise normal female character in an otherwise non-weird setting wearing in an outfit made up of about half a cat worth of material, it comes across as extremely forced. In a combat scenario, dress your female character like this:

And not like this:

Basically, I like it when the outfits match with the setting. Skimpy is fine in the Dead or Alive Volleyball games, but not so good in a combat situation.

Okay, while a character having big boobs won't completely turn me off from them, it really comes down to the character. I like Lulu and Tifa, because they have personalities and stories. That trumps sexuality in my book.

For the record, I find really big boobs unattractive. Double D's, or bigger, turn me off from the person or character. Boobs bigger than their head just seem unnatural and seem like they would get in the way. Maybe I'm odd, but that's a preference of mine.

Your poll is kinda bad.

I like sexy game characters, but I am not a fan of big breasts.

I honestly wouldnt much enjoy playing a game with ugly characters, either male or female.

When it comes to this particular discussion on character design and stylization, I feel that I do care a bit about the issue, but not enough to make me refuse to play a game or get very upset by it. I think some of these figures are unrealistic, but then again in some cases nothing is meant for realism and it is a game. Now, if the game wants to capitalize purely on the fact that there are breasts and jiggle physics in the game, I am not going to buy it in the first place. I play games because they do have a really entertaining story or gameplay - not to get excited for other reasons. However, if a game happens to have the art style, while having a really good story or gameplay, I won't discredit the game just for that reason.

I am not really a person to go and bring up or start discussions about stuff. I might chime in like I am doing here, but usually, if I disagree with something I just don't give them my money. If there were games that are really offensive for any reason, I just won't buy it. However, to me the character design for Dragon's Crown wasn't really offensive, but slightly ridiculous. If there is something like this it might take me out of the moment or immersion of being in the game, but it would not turn me away from the game completely. I would like to have more realistic art, or art that is fancy or ridiculous for other reasons like that of a fantasy game or a futuristic science fiction game, but I don't care too much if the artists decide to draw their characters with larger breasts.

oreso:
Sexy females are overused, sure. I'd like more ugly and monstrous females. (Along with females who are stupid, lazy and evil. These traits are almost overwhelmingly given to males)

I think that kinda goes along with female characters getting very little characterization in general. Females seem to be limited to being Princess Peach style damsels in distress, sexy eyecandy for the target audience or sexy badass girls. With a few notable exceptions those are the females we get in games.

I'd love to see videogame females of all shapes, sizes, colors and personalities. It really does bother me that the only two types of females we get are the vurnerable and weak ones in need of protection, and the impossibly badass and capable ones, and they both share the same hourglass with big boobs body.

Even in games with character customization the options usually seem to range from "slender with big breasts" to "slightly less slender and with even bigger breasts", but then again the males aren't much better with their "tall and muscled" or "tall and EXTREMELY muscled"... Ohw, and of course a reasonable selection of short hairstyles. But even if the player-character is ment to be some sort of perfect ideal of a human being, it doesn't make any sence that all female NPCs have to conform to those same ideals...
