Stray Gods Trailer: Check Out a Musical RPG from a Dragon Age Creator

Humble Games and Summerfall Studios have revealed the teaser trailer for Stray Gods, a role-playing musical that was previously known as Chorus. Stray Gods comes from some all-star talent, including David Gaider, lead writer and world creator on Dragon Age; Austin Wintory, composer of games like Journey, Abzu, and The Pathless; and Liam Esler, who worked on Baldur’s Gate: Siege of Dragonspear.

This was originally planned as a two-hour game, but the support from Humble Games has allowed it to expand significantly. In fact, Wintory estimates he has written more music for this game than any other, including for lots of little optional scenes that most players may not even discover. (Scott Edgar, Steven Gates and Simon Hall of Tripod, and Jess Cerro are also composing for the game.) There are furthermore various romances to pursue and numerous branching paths in the musical narrative.

You can check out the Stray Gods teaser trailer below.

The premise of the game is that the Greek gods still live in secret in the world, and Grace gains the power of a Muse “to draw others into musical numbers… power that she’ll need to find out the truth behind her predecessor’s death before time runs out.” Songs will branch out according to how you choose to approach conversations, and the game encourages repeated playthroughs to watch significantly different versions of the story unfold.

Here is the effective elevator pitch for what the game is in a nutshell: “Stray Gods is an irreverent and heartfelt reconception of Greek mythology combining what we love about contemporary musical theater (think Buffy: ‘Once More With Feeling,’ Hadestown, and Wicked) with video games where character and story take center stage (think Dream Daddy, Life Is Strange, and Dragon Age).”

The game has no release window yet, so rewatch the Stray Gods teaser trailer a few times and stay tuned for more updates.
