Tencent Opening Studio Led by Rockstar Veteran to Make Open-World AAA Next-Gen Title

Tencent Games is opening a gaming studio that is developing an open-world AAA game for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X. Called LightSpeed LA, the Orange County-based developer will be headed up by Rockstar Games veteran Steve Martin, who is also serving as executive producer of development. Martin previously worked on Grand Theft Auto V and Red Dead Redemption 2 and will be joined by other talent with backgrounds from Rockstar, Respawn Entertainment, 2K Games, and Insomniac Games at the new Tencent studio.

Per GamesIndustry.biz, Martin commented on LightSpeed LA’s ambitions and goals in a statement, promising to provide a “crunch-free and inclusive environment”:

We’re ushering a new era of game culture by combining world-class development with a stress-free work environment. From day one, our teams will be focused on building the highest caliber games while promoting integrity, proactivity, collaboration, and creativity.

You’ve probably heard more about Tencent in the news recently as we’ve approached the release of the Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5. The company recently announced its Pokémon MOBA, Pokémon Unite, and gained control of System Shock 3.

Aside from the knowledge that LightSpeed’s game will be AAA and open-world, no further details have been revealed, so stay tuned for any information regarding the mystery game and its release timeline.
