Fallout 76: Steel Dawn to Launch Early Today Following Update Mishap

Fallout 76: Steel Dawn is launching today – one week earlier than originally planned. Bethesda updated fans on the early launch in a post on its website, explaining that the decision was made after a glitch allowed some Xbox players to begin downloading Steel Dawn ahead of its Dec. 1 release. Those that downloaded the update early were then locked out of playing the game entirely.

“We immediately began investigating ways we could get our Xbox players back in-game as soon as possible,” the Fallout 76 update post says. “However, in our discussions, all of us at Bethesda Game Studios felt the best way to resolve this was to release the update for everyone.”

So, starting today at 4 p.m. ET, Fallout 76 went offline for maintenance for what will amount to “around six hours.” After maintenance is completed, the Steel Dawn questline, the C.A.M.P. Shelter, and the rest of the update will be available for players on all platforms.

Fallout 76: Steel Dawn comes as the latest major change to Bethesda’s multiplayer spinoff. Following a delay late last year, the publisher launched its Wastelanders update this past April. Wastelanders came as the game’s most wanted addition yet by bringing NPCs with their own quests and stories to follow.
