First RTS to Feature Cross-PC/Xbox 360 Play Announced

Universe at War, a real-time strategy title being developed by Petroglyph and published by Sega, is set to become the first title of the genre to support cross-platform multiplayer between the Xbox 360 and the PC.

Set to ship later this year on the PC and first quarter of next year on the console, the game will use Microsoft’s Windows Live technology. Currently, the only title with cross-platform play is the recently-released Shadowrun.

While real-time strategy controls were traditionally lacking on the console, the latest iteration of Command & Conquer arrived on the 360 shortly after its PC release and received high marks.

The developers behind Universe at War were also heavily involved in the C&C franchise, and created Star Wars: Empire at War. Like that title, the game will feature a “global strategic” layer and will also showcase powerful hero units.

In a marked departure from similarly-themed games, humans, the developers said, will serve merely as “cannon-fodder” for other powerful alien factions fighting for world domination.
