id Software Engine Very Versatile, Official Claims

Steve Nix, the head of id Software’s business development team, told Gamespot that the company’s latest engine is impressing developers with its versatility.

First introduced to the public at the WWDC by John Carmack, pricing models, in-house games and other titles using the engine are all as yet unannounced, Nix said.

But developers are “extremely impressed” by the graphics and, moreover, the cross-platform compatibility, Nix claimed.

The id official said his company’s latest engine runs on the PC, Mac, PS3 and 360 with the same assets at a smooth frame rate without any gimmickry or tweaking required.

“When people walk into our booth, they see that we have four platforms running at 60Hz with the exact same assets. We probably have artists in the company that aren’t aware we have our new technology running on the PS3 because you need to do absolutely zero changes, no packaging, no extra baking, no extra steps, to get to the PS3. It really is a seamless, multiplatform, no-hassle solution,” Nix said.

He went on to note that the only direct competition is Epic’s Unreal 3 engine, and that A-list games employing the engine will still require the typical two to three-year development cycle.
