Brett Ratner Wants To Do A Guitar Hero Movie

Brett Ratner says he’d really love to do a Guitar Hero movie, but in a remarkable burst of insight added that he doesn’t think Activision would want him to screw up the franchise.

Ratner, the artistic driving force behind movies including the Rush Hour franchise and the last (and by far crappiest) chapter in the X-Men series, expressed his interest in the game to Jocelyn Vena of MTV News. “I love Guitar Hero and I think it’s a part of pop culture,” he said. “I would love to do a Guitar Hero movie, if Activision would ever let me. I’m trying to convince them, but why would you have a movie screw up such a huge franchise? Not that I would make a bad movie. So that would be cool, to do a Guitar Hero movie.”

“It could be about a kid from a small town who dreams of being a rock star and he wins the Guitar Hero competition,” he added. “One of those dreams-[come-true] kind of concepts.”

Ratner’s claimed his relationship with Activision through his Brett Ratner Brands consultancy has given him a considerable amount of influence over the Guitar Hero games. “I have a deal with Activision for their branding,” he said. “For instance, naming Guitar Hero: World Tour, coming up with the new Guitar Hero game name. It’s sort of like Rock Band. So they said, ‘Come up with a name.’ And I did, and it became Guitar Hero: World Tour.”

I think Activision’s reluctance to hand Ratner the keys to a Guitar Hero movie speaks well of the company, despite his protestations that he wouldn’t make a bad movie out of it. Some movies are inherently well-suited for translation to the big screen, and some just aren’t. Besides, not doing a Guitar Hero movie will give Ratner more time to collect acclaim for directing music videos in which people sing directly into a camera.
