Blind Gamer Tackles Zelda: Ocarina of Time

Millions of gamers have beaten the legendary Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time over the years, but how many of them could do it without ever being able to see the screen?

Back in the day, I played the hell out of Ocarina of Time, and I was damn good at it, too. I had that game memorized backwards and forwards to the point where I’d have the elusive Biggoron’s Sword before I ever set foot inside the Forest Temple. But no matter how good I was at the game, I couldn’t imagine ever doing it without looking at the screen.

And that is, in fact, what YouTube user genuinescorruption is trying to do. Genuines, who has been blind since birth, is progressing his way through the classic N64 title with a bit of help:

This is an entirely community-driven project.
These are videos of me, a person blind from birth, playing through Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, with the help of four Zelda fans on YouTube who have put a very generous amount of time and dedication into writing very specific, script-stile (sic) directions that have allowed me to navigate through the game.

Back in 2007, he posted a video of himself fighting a boss in Zelda: Twilight Princess in order to prove his blindness, so this clearly isn’t his first time with the Zelda series.

It’s almost impossible to imagine playing a game without such a fundamental sense as sight, and yet, here he is. It’s obviously difficult, and you can tell that he gets stuck at parts, but somehow he manages to keep on trucking. So for that – for doing something I could never even imagine doing – this blind gamer gets mad, mad props.

His most recent video has him doing sidequests in Hyrule Castle Town, so he’s still pretty early into the game, with a ways to go. And boy, do we wish him luck.
