Marvel Takes Top Spot In Worldwide Movie Box Office 2013

So just how much did Iron Man 3 make, worldwide?

Iron Man 3, Marvel’s latest blockbuster, took home $1.215 billion worldwide in 2013, making it the box office champ of the year. It’s the 5th highest grossing film of all time, beaten only by Avatar, Titanic, Marvel’s The Avengers and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2.

Disney must be pleased. The House of Mouse also made two other of the top-ten 2013 earners, Monsters University ($743.6 million, #5), and Thor: The Dark World ($629.4 million, #8). Iron Man 3 was the only 2013 film to take more than a billion; its closest competition, Despicable Me 2, took home $918.7 million worldwide.

If anybody knows whether Robert Downey Jr will reprise his Tony Stark role, they aren’t saying. Downey’s contract expired after Iron Man 3‘s release, but the actor has said he’s open to extending it. There’s still a lot that could be done with the character, Downey believes.

“Let me just say me and the agents and the lawyers are having a bit of a ball right now,” said Downey to ScreenRant back in February. “‘You pinch me! No, you pinch me!'”
