House of Cards Season 3 Picked Up Ahead of Second Season Debut

Congressman Underwood just sewed up re-election way ahead of the midterms.

Fans haven’t even seen a second of House of Cards‘ second season, but there’s already more political drama in the pipeline: Netflix has already renewed the show for a third season. Despite spending $100 million on the first two seasons of House of Cards, its second original show, Netflix clearly believes the investment has already paid off: Not only was the show’s first season a popular and critical success, it’s three Emmy wins were the first ever awarded to program released by a digital service. Star Robin Wright also earned a Golden Globe for her performance.

“Our intent is that the show keep going for sure,” said Netflix Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos. “It was a 26-episode commitment. It was not our intent that it just run for two seasons.”

Netflix is currently in the middle of producing sophomore seasons for many of its 2013 hits, including Hemlock Grove and Orange is the New Black. The network is also in talks to produce either a new season or feature follow-up to their Arrested Development revival.

Season two of House of Cards will be available in its entirety on Netflix February 15.
