Legendary Pictures CEO and Pacific Rim producer Thomas Tull says the studio is open to a sequel.
Guillermo Del Toro’s action adventure starring massive jaegers and even more massive kaiju was a modest success at the box office last summer. The film’s box office gross was $407 million worldwide, a sizeable sum but not enough to guarantee a franchise. The movie has attracted some dedicated fans and praise from critics, topping The Escapist’s own MovieBob’s Best of 2013 list. Guillermo tel Toro confirmed in October that he and Pacific Rim screenwriter Travis Beacham were working on a script for a sequel. However, the decision to make a second film in the Pacific Rim universe lies with Legendary Pictures. The studio had been silent on the possibility of a sequel until now. Legendary Pictures CEO and Pacific Rim producer Thomas Tull responded positively to questions about it in an interview with Collider on March 19.
We love being in business with Guillermo and frankly that movie, if you look it up, did I think more business than the first X-Men, did more than Batman Begins, our first movie, did more than Superman Returns, The Fast and the Furious, Star Trek– so for a movie that was an original property that we made up it’s done really well. It did north of 400 million dollars globally and both the home video sales and the merchandise have way over-indexed, so it seems like fans really loved the world. So we’re going to sit down with Guillermo and as long as we think it’s authentic and there’s something to say, we’re certainly open to it.
Legendary Picture’s upcoming Godzilla reboot will further test public appetite for the kaiju genre. If Godzilla does well at the box office, it could help make a Pacific Rim sequel a reality. Pacific Rim will remain a great standalone movie without a sequel, but the world that Del Toro and Beacham created has a lot of potential to tell more stories. A prequel could explore the early days of the jaegars, or a sequel could see humanity intentionally create a rift to the alien dimension that birthed the kaiju. Charlie Day, who played the kaiju-obsessed scientist Newt, has said that Del Toro has considered making his character a villain in the sequel.
