Bionicle: Masks of Power Gameplay Video Has Nier-Inspired Combat & Stunning Visuals

Team Kanohi has returned to show off the first look at gameplay in Bionicle: Masks of Power, its high-quality (and free) fan game coming to PC via Steam. Created from the ground up with Unreal Engine 5, this six-and-a-half-minute gameplay video shows off footage so impressive that it might as well be an officially licensed Lego product. It’s especially awesome considering previous glimpses only showed a peek at the environments, making this our first proper look at combat, animations, enemies, and traversal.

Aside from a brief dialogue with one of the island natives, the video showcases how players will deal with a handful of different enemy types. Specifically, the footage highlights smaller enemies like the spiders, which group up and surround the player before they are quickly dispatched with the ax weapon. The ax looks like a helpful and heavy tool, but players will also have the power of masks at their disposal in Bionicle: Masks of Power. The Mask of Shielding gets the spotlight today, with the player able to use it to generate a green bubble, blocking the attacks of giant flying bug enemies.

Combat in Bionicle: Masks of Power takes some inspiration from the Nier series, with players needing to execute quick dodges before moving in for the kill. Giant cave-dwelling spiders and scorpions take up a lot of the runtime, but don’t let them distract you from the game’s already killer-sounding soundtrack. Check out Bionicle: Masks of Power gameplay below.

Late last year, we caught up with Team Kanohi development and programming lead Zachary “ASCII” Ledbetter to talk about Bionicle: Masks of Power and all the work the team has already put into its ambitious fan creation. It doesn’t have a release date yet, but you can be sure to stick with us for any updates.
