The director of the infamous 1979 film, Caligula, announced plans to make a 3D pornographic film, according to the Hollywood Reporter.
Caligula tells the story of that Roman emperor Gaius Caesar Germanicus and depicts pagan Rome with explicit violence and sex that scandalized audiences at the time. The Italian erotic film director, Tinto Brass, reportedly clashed with producer Bob Guccione, the publisher of Penthouse, on the inclusion of some of the raunchier sex scenes. For many critics, the film was horridly cruel and needlessly shocking, and is only remembered for performances from Malcolm McDowell, John Gielgud and Helen Mirren. That, and the tits.
But according to the Hollywood Reporter, Brass has found financing to make a 3D film and “revisit an abandoned project about a Roman emperor that was ruined by Americans.” This suggests that the planned 3D film is a remake of Caligula. The success of Avatar means that the time is right for the world’s first 3D erotic film, said Brass, 76.
The film will be the first 3D film shot in Italy and begins shooting in May or June of 2010.
