One Half-Life 2 modder has taken to remaking classic NES games, now giving Contra its chance to shine.
Contra has gone officially 3D before, but never first-person. Half-Life 2 mod creator M0rtanius makes this look like a mistake with his remake of Contra that uses the Half-Life 2 engine.
M0rtanius has already released a mashup of Half-Life 2 and Castlevania, but Contra is much more suited to Half-Life 2 considering that both games actually use guns. Though a Castlevania protagonist at one point or another has picked up a firearm, this didn’t happen until much later than the NES era.
The Castlevania mod was a nice piece of work, but this Contra remake actually looks like it would be a fun game to play. M0rtanius has put a lot of Contra goodness in there, from the exploding bridges to the floating powerups, and even recreated the fortress boss at the end of the first level. Can’t wait to see what he comes up with next; maybe a remake of Chip and Dale’s Rescue Rangers?
