Footage Surfaces of Unreleased Blaxploitation Star Wars Film

This article is over 14 years old and may contain outdated information

Han Solo shot first, but Lando Calrissian shot funky.

Star Wars has been many things over the years. It’s been a legendary space opera film series, it’s been a cheesy cartoon series (Ewoks and Droids), it’s been an awesome cartoon series (the animated Clone Wars), and it’s been a … whatever the hell the Holiday Special was.

What you may not know is that George Lucas also considered making a 70s-style blaxploitation flick spinoff starring roguish gambler and con man Lando Calrissian. Titled Blackstar Warrior, the film was buried for years before footage of this long-rumored trailer finally surfaced at last month’s Comic-Con.

Okay, in case you haven’t figured it out, this isn’t a real movie. This is a brilliantly executed fan-made parody created by filmmaker Fred Jackson, who clearly knows who the real ladies’ man in the Star Wars trilogy is (and it ain’t Han). There’s a hilarious threepart mockumentary about the creation of the parody gem that takes the idea completely seriously, and is all the funnier for it.

You know what? I’m not ashamed to say that I would watch this movie. I would watch the hell out of this movie.
