iPhone Not a DS Competitor, Says Analyst

Is the iPhone as a DS competitor? Not a chance, says analyst.

A New York Post story that asserts Apple is positioning its iPhone as a competitor to the Nintendo DS is without foundation, according to Wedbush Morgan Securities analyst Michael Patcher.

“The markets are different. The iPhone is an expensive toy for the wealthy and self-indulgent, while the DS is an inexpensive toy for everyone,” said Pachter, who rarely shies away from candid talk.

Patcher further said that Apple will make mobile phone games “a bit more significant and fun,” but that he “cannot conceive of their gaining significant share of he hand-held market,” because of price and weak third-party support.

Currently, the DS faces competition in the field of hand-helds only from the PSP.
