Itagaki Gets Bloodier Than Ever With Devil’s Third

This article is over 14 years old and may contain outdated information

The creator of Ninja Gaiden has revealed his latest project to be a very bloody affair.

Tomonobu Itagaki, known for creating Dead or Alive and Ninja Gaiden, has revealed his first game since leaving Team Ninja and Tecmo. Now the head of Valhalla Game Studios, Itagaki’s upcoming game is called Devil’s Third.

There should be little doubt that Devil’s Third is a bloody game. Enemies will get chopped apart with samurai swords, turned into gory messes with gatling guns before they hit the ground, and blown to pieces with bazookas. It looks very much like an urban Ninja Gaiden with guns. Lots of guns.

Devil’s Third is a shooter, but Itagaki told Andriasang that Devil’s Third will be a “shooter that only Valhalla could make.” Though the game’s story is still in development, it has what Itagaki calls a “serious script” and the “most realistic setting yet” out of all his games. Even more realistic than the game that features women with gigantic boobs playing sports in a beach paradise, if you can believe it.

The basic storyline involves the world after what is called “Kessler Syndrome,” where an overabundance of low orbit satellites have begun colliding with each other and littered space so that it can no longer be explored. Unfortunately, these destroyed satellites can no longer be used either. The impossibility of space-travel appears to make people go ape on each other with swords. Aside from this basic concept, nothing else on the game’s story is known.

Itagaki isn’t discriminating against either next-gen console this time, bringing Devil’s Third to both the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 at release. Trailers are tailored to make gamers drool, but this first look at Devil’s Third has got more saliva running out of the sides of my mouth than normal. Sadly, Itagaki says it’s only “5 to 10%” complete, but it’ll get here eventually.
