Killing Floor 2 Announced for PC and SteamOS

Tripwire Interactive is developing horror FPS Killing Floor 2 for PC and SteamOS with a focus on gore, co-op, and modders.

Five years after the retail release of the Unreal mod Killing Floor, Tripwire Interactive is working on a sequel for PC and SteamOS. No release window has been revealed, but the team has been working on the title since 2011. The co-op shooter pits players against waves of zeds, genetic freaks that are ripped to pieces by bullets and blades in an advanced gore system Tripwire built over the past two years. Enemies with 19 points of dismemberment are shredded using mechanics designed to surpass Soldier of Fortune’s graphic violence.

Killing Floor 2 is a simple horror-shooter, with the premise of engaging players through a loop of gameplay. “You have weapons. You see something that looks messed up. And you kill it. You get money for doing it and you buy better weapons,” according to Bill Munk, the Creative Director at Tripwire. “Rinse and repeat.” Along with buying better guns, players also unlock a selection of perks as they level up.

The first Killing Floor, released for retail in 2009, was a product of the modding community of Unreal Tournament 2004, and Tripwire intends to involve modders in Killing Floor 2. Steam Workshop support is planned and the developer will release a mod SDK for the community. Gore and animation systems, zed attacks, and even the lighting system will be accessible to modders. The team believes that the community can create great content for the game and is keeping this in mind throughout development. “Every system that we make we’re looking at how to make it extensible to modders,” said Art Director David Hensley.
