Minecraft: Xbox 360 Retail Edition Delayed

The disc-based version of Minecraft for Xbox 360 has been delayed until June 4th.

Minecraft has been available for download on the Xbox 360 for close to a year now and it would be safe to call it a success. A mere five days after its release to Xbox Live Arcade, the game had already sold more than a million copies. It would go on to dominate XBLA sales for months and has remained a profitable and prominent entry in the Xbox 360’s digital library ever since. Hoping to translate this success to some retail sales, Microsoft announced a disc-based edition of the game in March. Originally pegged with an April 30th release date, it has now been announced that the retail version has been pushed back to June 4th.

“In order to include the very latest content, the retail version for Minecraft: Xbox 360 has been delayed until June 4th,” said Xbox spokesperson Larry Hryb, in a Tweet. Hryb offered no specifics regarding exactly what the “latest content” might entail. That said, the game’s ninth update, released on April 5th, brought with it a slew of bugs and other issues that 4J Studios, the developer behind the 360 port, has since been working to correct. Microsoft could have conceivably pushed the retail release back to provide time for the corrective update to be completed so the retail version can launch problem free.

The delay is likely to disappoint some, but luckily the digital version is still ready, available, and priced roughly the same as the 19.99 retail edition. Unfortunately, the issues from the recent update are still in effect, and if the next patch does line up with the launch of the disc version, it could mean a few months of waiting for them to be fixed. On the plus side, the PC version of Minecraft is alive and well, having recently reached the milestone of 10 million copies sold.
