Oculus Closes VR Movie Studio: Story Studio

This article is over 7 years old and may contain outdated information

Story Studio, which produced the Emmy-award winning VR short Henry, has been shuttered by Oculus.

Oculus, the creator of popular VR headset the Oculus Rift, has announced the closure of one of its studios today. The studio in question is Story Studio, a division of the company that focuses on VR movies, rather than games. It produced the Emmy-award winning VR short Henry.

“We’ve decided to shift our focus away from internal content creation to support more external production,” said Oculus executive Jason Rubin in a blog post. “As part of that shift, we’ll be winding down Story Studio.”

“Now that a large community of filmmakers and developers are committed to the narrative VR art form, we’re going to focus on funding and supporting their content. This helps us turn our internal research, development, and attention towards exciting but unsolved problems in AR and VR hardware and software.”

Despite the closure, Rubin has assured fans that Oculus remains committed to growing the VR film and creative content ecosystem.
