Taking a momentary break from destroying worldwide productivity via colored gems and weaponized produce, PopCap Games has set it sights on a more altruistic goal: helping sick kids.
The company, which is best known for its phenomenal Peggle, Bejeweled and Plants Vs. Zombies games, has taken to eBay to auction a number of exclusive art pieces from its best loved games.
Courtesy the official press release:
PopCap Games, the worldwide leader in casual games, today launched a series of online auctions that will continue through July 12 located at www.ebay.com/popcap, and involve the sale of 34 pieces of PopCap-related art. Each weekly wave of 7-day auctions will consist of up to 9 items, with all proceeds benefitting two leading non-profit organizations: the Starlight Children’s Foundation in the United States and SpecialEffect in the United Kingdom.
With the help of Kompolt, an auction management firm for charities and nonprofit organizations, PopCap is giving consumers a chance to bid on once-in-a-lifetime items from the PopCap vault in the very first PopCap eBay charity auction. The month-long series of auctions will include items such as original concept sketches from Plants vs. Zombies, Bookworm and Peggle, one-of-a-kind game-themed ceramic sets, a 6-foot-by-6-foot painting of a DJ’ing zombie, a blue neon Bejeweled diamond, personalized sketches and more.
As the PR blast states, all proceeds from this auction will go to help the Starlight Children’s Foundation and the UK’s SpecialEffect charity group, both of which are dedicated to helping infirmed and disabled children.
“This auction is our way of letting consumers peek behind the creativity curtain at PopCap, but more than that, it’s a wonderful opportunity for us and fans of our games to support children in need,” said PopCap’s Vice President of Marketing Ben Rotholtz. “Every piece in the auction is unique and each reflects a facet of PopCap’s history in a whimsical way.”
In case a chance to help underprivileged kids isn’t enough motivation for you to dig into your wallet — and it really should be — the selection of items should sway your miserly heart.
Everything on auction would look fantastic in the den/bedroom/gaming-themed art gallery of any PopCap fan, but I’m particularly drawn to this sketchy Peggle concept art. If any of you are thinking of winning my friendship via awesome Christmas gift, here’s your chance.
The auction comes to an end on July 12, so you’ve still got plenty of time to scrounge up the cash for a piece of PopCap art. Don’t think of it as an investment in gaming memorabilia, think of it as the kindest thing you’ll do this year.
