Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Movie trailer Netflix animated Krang family Casey Jones time traveler

There is a ton of Ninja Turtles stuff coming out right now, including a new live-action movie, a theatrical CGI-animated film, a series of villain movies on Paramount+, and a slew of new and collected video games. Netflix, as it likes to do, is getting in on the game as well and ahead of everyone else with the release of the Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie, which just dropped its first trailer.

The film picks up after the conclusion of the TV series, which ran for two seasons on Nickelodeon and featured the turtles not only at their most teenage but also with mystical ninja powers. As the Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie trailer shows, the four mutant brothers will face off against a deadly foe from the future in the Krangs, a reimagining of the classic villain Krang from the original series. They’re warned of the Krangs coming by a time traveler in a hockey mask named Casey Jones and set off on an adventure to save the earth, but without their mystical ninja powers.

The entire voice cast appears to be returning for the film along with some fantastic-looking animation. Ant Ward and Andy Suriano are directing with Tony Gama-Lobo and Rebecca May writing a screenplay that is described as “the most adventurous, emotional, and epic story ever told of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.”

Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles was the fourth iteration of the turtles in animated series form but didn’t survive very long on Nick. Aside from the horrible live-action TV show, every other series has run for at least five seasons. The TMNT rights are all owned by Nickelodeon’s parent company Viacom, which is part of Paramount Global, so one would think that most of the TMNT content would live there. However, Netflix plays host to multiple TMNT series and is clearly hoping this film will make people think of them as the house of the Heroes in a Half Shell.

Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Movie will release on Netflix on August 5.
