Russian Doll Creator Is Making ‘Female-Centric’ Disney+ Star Wars Show

This article is over 4 years old and may contain outdated information

Disney might be slowing down onĀ Star Wars movies, but its Disney+ efforts for the franchise are many and varied. The latest news is that another TV series is in development from Russian DollĀ co-creator, showrunner, and executive producer Leslye Headland.

There are no confirmed details, but the series is said to be female-led and will take place in another part of the Star Wars timeline compared to other current works. There is plenty of Star Wars timeline to choose from, of course, given the expulsion of the expanded universe from canon after Disney bought the franchise. The show could even be tied into Disney’s exploration of The High Republic, which Disney is already exploring in a massive series of books and comics.

Headland, whose Russian Doll was nominated for 13 Emmys and won three, is said to be acting as showrunner for the series and will write too, much the same as Jon Favreau does for The Mandalorian. There is no word on if she will direct, but she does have experience, having directed multiple episodes of Russian Doll. The series is currently staffing in preparation for pre-production work.

This will make fourĀ Star Wars series in production for Disney+, making Disney’s strategy for the franchise seem squarely focused on TV shows at the moment. They have the second and third seasons of The MandalorianĀ coming, a series based onĀ Rogue One, and the Obi-Wan series with Ewan McGregor returning to the role.
