Publisher THQ announces a demo that “redefines open world gaming,” from Champaign, Illinois-based developer Volition, a spin-off of Parallax Software, famous for the Descent series.

In Saints Row, players start as a member of the 3rd Street Saints. Under constant threat from rival gangs and corrupt officials, the city of Stilwater must be conquered one district at a time. Offering an unparalleled level of character and vehicle customization and the freedom to progress through the game any way the player chooses. Every action taken in the fully dynamic world is an opportunity for players to earn respect.

With enough respect, the city evolves into a giant playground for the player to traverse. The game hopes to revolutionize the open world genre with an online multiplayer experience, allowing players to battle it out against rival gangs online for the first time. The game will support 12 players on Xbox Live.

Offering hours of open-world gameplay, the Saints Row demo is an introduction to the game’s intense single-player campaign, revealing a first-look into the in-depth character customization, detailed graphics, over-the-top gameplay and gripping storyline. The demo is now available for free download on Xbox Live Marketplace, and is rated M for mature.

“The level of anticipation among consumers and press continues to build. The Saints Row demo will give consumers a chance to experience a small piece of the revolutionary game coming later this month.” concluded Bob Aniello, senior vice president of worldwide marketing at THQ.

The game itself will be released on August 29th.
