Scribblenauts Developer Teases Source Engine Game

5th Cell is known for quirky DS games, but the studio now has something mysterious in the works, using Valve’s Source Engine.

Take Half-Life 2 and mix it with Scribblenauts. What do you get? Nobody knows but 5th Cell’s Jeremy Slaczka, who revealed to Joystiq that the company is working on a secret Source Engine-based game.

“We’re not ready to reveal our next original game just yet, but I can say we’re using the Source Engine for it,” he said. “Hopefully we’ll have something to show people in a few months.”

5th Cell has become known over the past few years for innovative DS titles such as Drawn to Life, Lock’s Quest, and Scribblenauts. Scribblenauts, a game that allows players to write whatever they want into existence, sold very well and the studio has already announced a sequel called Super Scribblenauts.

This level of success may have allowed 5th Cell to venture into other areas of the industry besides the DS, because a Source Engine game is unlikely to be for Nintendo’s handheld. The Source Engine, created by Valve, has been the framework for games such as Half-Life 2, Portal, Left 4 Dead, Dark Messiah of Might & Magic, and Zeno Clash. These are very different products from what 5th Cell has developed in the recent past.

5th Cell is known to have an XBLA project in the works, but didn’t attach it to this Source Engine project. The studio has proven itself to me as one that can create interesting games with different gameplay mechanics, so I’m dying to see what it’s going to do with the Source Engine, that’s for sure.
